Swans can't quite match Tigers to close season

Wednesday, August 28, 2019 - 8:00 AM - by Chris Pike

IT might have not been the finish to the 2019 WAFL season Swan Districts was hoping for with a 106-point loss to Claremont, but it shouldn’t take away from the blocks built for the future this year.

Swans came into Saturday's game not without hope of causing an upset to end the season as well and even avoid the wooden spoon despite taking on a finals bound Claremont at Claremont Oval.

Swan Districts had won two of its past three matches to come into the clash with a degree of momentum, but it ended up a tough afternoon with the Tigers roaring into the finals with the 23.6 (144) to 5.8 (38) win on home soil.

Tuesday, August 20, 2019 - 10:38 AM - by Chris Pike

THE future continues to look bright for Swan Districts with an increasingly youthful team winning a second game in three weeks to end the finals hopes of Peel Thunder on Saturday while also remaining a chance to avoid the wooden spoon.

In a low-scoring affair, Swan Districts kicked four goals to two in the second half against Peel on Saturday at Steel Blue Oval to make it two wins from the past three matches, winning 7.6 (48) to 6.8 (44).

There was plenty to like from a Swan Districts team especially considering the youth in the group to beat a team with nine AFL-listed players along two former Essendon stalwarts, and a couple of Thunder stars destined for the AFL.

Round 19 Preview v Peel Thunder

Friday, August 16, 2019 - 2:48 PM - by Chris Pike

SWAN Districts runs out onto Steel Blue Oval for the last time in 2019 on Saturday afternoon against Peel Thunder and the black-and-whites have the chance to both hold out hope of avoiding the wooden spoon and ending Peel's season in the process.

Swans are back to Steel Blue Oval on Saturday afternoon and while it might appear there's not a lot to play for, there's plenty of motivation for the black-and-whites players especially to try and send off the home fans on a pleasing note and to continue to try and finish off the season with momentum.

Swan Districts could also avoid the wooden spoon for 2019 by winning its last two matches so while that remains a possibility, it's worth aiming for.
