WAFLW - When we met in 2019 and how to win in 2020.
It’s a new-look season for the 2020 Optus WAFLW Premiership Season. Shortened to just 7 rounds and with the addition of South Fremantle, it is more important than ever to make every game count.
With just over a week to go before our Swan Districts WAFLW team take to the field, we look back on how we matched up against each team last year, and what we need to do to get the win against them in this shortened season.

How to beat them in 2020?
Peel have got a lot of young players coming through. They have really good junior development and their league coach this year has coached them through juniors and grand finals. It’s actually going to be a good contest with their young team verse our young team. There will be a lot of fast running and quick flowing football. We’ll be relying on our depth and the experience of our younger girls who played league games last year – Leith Woods (Swan Districts WAFLW League Coach).

How to beat them in 2020?
Claremont are an up and coming team. Their midfield is quite strong and they have some younger, developing players. In a couple of years they will definitely be a team to watch. We are going to have to be on our toes as they have a lot of fast runners, and we will need to shut them down. The other thing we will need to bring against them is physicality – Emily McGuire (Swan Districts WAFLW Captain).

How to beat them in 2020?
Subi are a great all-round team. They are really strong and were the favourites last year for the cup. They have a strong midfield and they are very elite with their running. Their forward line is quite tall, and they have the right smalls to do damage. I think getting on top of their runners and shutting down their midfield will be the way to beat them – Emily McGuire (Swan Districts WAFLW Captain).

How to beat them in 2020?
East Freo are a professional outfit. They won the grand final last year and their AFLW players have imparted a lot of knowledge on to their younger players. They have got a good youth program and have had youth players playing through the state competitions as well. They will have good structures around the game, so we’re going to have to engage with them all over the ground. We’ll also have to win the one-on-ones around the ground to try and take control of the game – Leith Woods (Swan Districts WAFLW League Coach).
Round 5, 2020 - South Fremantle
A new team to the competition, South Fremantle will have a lot of young, up and coming players taking to the field. The unknown is always dangerous in footy and our Swans women won’t be able to go into the game just expecting the win.
With WAFLW clubs set to finalise dates and times in the coming days, we’ll keep you up to date on our Socials and Website so you can be there to watch them run out from Round 1.
