Round 9 WAFL Men’s Match Report

Peel Thunder are the form team of the WAFL Men’s competition and Swan Districts felt the brunt of that with the 62-point defeat against them in Mandurah on Saturday afternoon.

Swans took on the Thunder at Lane Group Stadium on Saturday afternoon in Round 9 of the WAFL Men’s competition and were up against it from the start with five goals to nil from Peel in the first quarter.

From there Peel would go on to record the 14.11 (95) to 4.9 (33) victory to make it five straight victories for themselves while Swans now sit with a 3-6 record for the season.

Leigh Kohlmann did kick two of the four goals in the game for Swan Districts with the others courtesy of Jesse Turner and Kade Chalcraft.

Blake Kelly finished with 29 possessions, Josh Cipro 25, Jackson McLachlan 23, Turner 20, Clint Hinchliffe 18, Jake Pasini 18, Bryce Watson 16 and Chalcraft 16.

Peel did make a fast start with two goals to Charlie Nicholls inside the first 10 minutes and he had a third 10 minutes later while the Thunder finished up with the only five goals of the opening term to lead by 30 points at quarter-time.

Leigh Kohlmann eventually kicked the first goal of the game for Swans at the 15-minute mark of the second quarter but Peel still went into half-time on top by 38 points.

Peel again kicked the first two goals of the second half before Jesse Turner and Kade Chalcraft did manage a goal each for Swan Districts to limit the lead of the home side to 51 points by three quarter-time.

Swans did get another goal in the last term from Kohlmann but still it was the Thunder who ended up winning by 62 points.

It was the Colts game that got the weekend’s action underway on Friday night and it wasn’t quite to be for Swan Districts with Peel Thunder scoring the 9.5 (59) to 6.9 (45) victory in Mandurah.

The Thunder kicked four goals to two from Swans in the first quarter before it was two goals apiece in the second term and that meant it was Peel holding a nine-point advantage by half-time.

There was just the one goal kicked in the third quarter and that went the way of Peel before both teams managed two goals in the last with the Thunder securing the 14-point victory on home turf.

Swan Districts are now sitting fifth in the Colts following the loss with a 3-5 record for the season by the end of Round 9.

Lebron Yarran kicked two goals for the Swans with Reeve Sheldon finishing with 21 possessions, Jai Debono 18, Hayden Young 16, Tom Martin 14 and Jake Mills 14.

The day’s action in Mandurah on Saturday got underway with the Reserves match up with Swan Districts ending up scoring the 11.10 (76) to 6.10 (46) victory against Peel Thunder.

It was a dominant start from Swans with four goals to nil in the first quarter and then despite Peel kicking three in the second term, the black-and-whites were still leading by 12 points at half-time.

It was then two goals to one in favour of Swan Districts in the third quarter and four to two in the last to secure the 30-point victory to remain undefeated this season in the Reserves with a perfect 8-0 record.

Anthony Hansen and Latrell Yarran both kicked two goals each in the win for Swan Districts while Otis Harvey racked up 28 possessions to go with six tackles and a goal.

Chayse Martinson also collected 24 disposals, Ben Hewett 23, Luke Cotellessa 21, Nathan Blakely 20, Mitch Roche 20, Lucas Andrews 18, Tom Cathcart 16 and Soren Feast 16.
