Vale Lance Bell

Swan Districts Football Club is saddened to announce the passing of Life Member Lance Bell, aged 92.

A boy from Bassendean and Guildford, Lance played Reserves football for Swans in the early 1950s,  and his heart stayed with the Black and Whites for the rest of his life.

He was always ready to get involved and contribute. With his tradesmen mates, he took on the jobs that needed doing around the club, from building brick walls and upgrading the changerooms to moving cabinets.

Lance held a number of key roles at the club. He served as Trophy Chairman during the John Todd years and helped establish the Swans Businessmen’s Association. He was made a Life Member of the Past Players & Officials Association in 1981, then served as its President from 1985 to 1988. In 1988, he was awarded Life Membership of Swan Districts Football Club.

Lance’s service was recognised many times over. He received a Certificate of Appreciation from the club for valued service in 1986, and a Certificate of Recognition for his contribution as a volunteer during the International Year of Volunteers in 2001. He was also presented with a Recognition Award to Volunteers of Australian Football, with the AFL thanking him for his contribution to the game.

Lance attended every home and away game he could. He especially enjoyed the reciprocal arrangements with the past players’ associations of other clubs. The highlights for him were the two triple Premiership eras under Haydn Bunton and John Todd.

Throughout those years, Lance was supported by his late wife Rae, who was always there to prepare afternoon teas and to back the club in any way she could.

Swan Districts Football Club extends its sincere condolences to Lance’s family and friends.
