SWAN Districts was part of history on Sunday hosting a game in the first round of the inaugural WAFL Women's Premiership Season and despite the loss to Subiaco, there was plenty of positives to take out of the day.

Swan Districts has been a powerhouse in West Australian female football for a long time and as a result were a lock to be one of the five teams included in the inaugural WAFLW season for 2019.

That saw Swans play host to Subiaco on Sunday afternoon at Steel Blue Oval to be part of history in the opening round of the new competition, with the Lions winning the game 7.5 (47) to 2.6 (18).

FOR three quarters Swan Districts looked a legitimate chance to hand Subiaco its first WAFL loss since the 2017 Grand Final and while the Lions responded to find a way to win the game, there was plenty to like from a Black Ducks perspective.

Swan Districts were coming off its first win of the season against West Perth and were ready for the challenge of the reigning premiers Subiaco at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Swans found themselves 16 points up at three quarter-time to throw down the gauntlet to the Lions, but Subiaco responded with the only five goals of the last quarter to end up winning 11.13 (79) to 9.7 (61).

SWAN Districts has been at the forefront of the growth of female football and it's only fitting the Black Ducks are part of the launch of inaugural WAFL Women's competition this Sunday against Subiaco at Steel Blue Oval.

Swan Districts has provided the benchmark for female football in Western Australia for sometime now including winning four recent WA Women's Football League premierships, and it was only in 2017 that they won the league, reserves and Youth Girls premierships all in the same season.

So when the new WAFLW competition was being launched for 2019 it was only fitting that Swan Districts would be one of the five clubs now involved.

Now it's time for Round 1 this Sunday and Swan Districts will be hosting Subiaco at Steel Blue Oval with league action beginning at 2.45pm. It will be live streamed on www.wafl.com.au.

SWAN Districts is coming off its first win of the 2019 WAFL season and now has the challenge of taking on Subiaco on Saturday at Steel Blue Oval.

Swans had played some good football over the opening three rounds of the season but couldn’t quite get over the line.

That all changed last Saturday at HBF Arena with a commanding performance to control the contest against West Perth virtually all day to end up getting that first win on the board for the season.

The reward for the Black Ducks is a clash with the undefeated Subiaco who haven’t lost a game since the 2017 WAFL Grand Final.

The league clash gets underway on Saturday at Steel Blue Oval at 2.40pm. It will be Swans' first televised game of the season as well and it will be live on Channel 7 from 2.30pm.

ALREADY a four-time premiership player at Swan Districts, Kara Donnellan will be coaching Swans into the new Optus WAFL Women's competition starting this Sunday and she couldn’t be more proud to be part of the new era.

Donnellan has already been a ground breaker in football with whatever she has done since making the move to join Swan Districts earlier this decade.

Along the way she has been at the forefront of the Swan Districts' success in the WA Women's Football League including winning the four premierships along with being a cornerstone of WA representative teams and now for the past three seasons playing for Fremantle in the AFL Women's competition.

SWAN Districts trio Tony Notte, Corey Gault and George Hampson have all been named in the initial Kia WAFL State squad of 31 players ahead of next Sunday's State match against South Australia at Optus Stadium.

Notte, Gault and Hampson have all had strong starts to the season for Swan Districts and appear strong chances to pull on the Black Swans jumper against the SANFL.

Notte has continued the form that he's displayed throughout the majority of his 223-game dual Swan Medal winning career at the Black Ducks. He's having a rock solid season once more defensively for Swans but he has the ability to still go forward and pinch-hit in the ruck.

SWAN Districts had gone close in the opening three games of the season and it all came together on Saturday at Joondalup Arena with the Black Ducks beating West Perth impressively by 44 points.

With Corey Gault standing tall booting five goals and George Hampson producing a best on ground performance, Swan Districts delivered an impressive display for the first win of the season on the back of three narrow losses to South Fremantle, East Perth and Perth.

Corey Gault spent more time in attack than the ruck for Swan Districts and it paid dividends with the 2017 Swan Medallist kicking five goals from 18 possessions and six marks.

SWAN Districts heads to Joondalup Arena for the now annual ANZAC Round fixture with West Perth looking to record its first victory of 2019 against the also winless Falcons on Saturday afternoon.

Both Swan Districts and West Perth have lost their opening three games of the season raising the stakes significantly for Saturday's clash at Joondalup Arena with the knowledge that coming back in an 18-game season from starting 0-4 will be a significant challenge.

It is also the continuation of the now annual meeting over ANZAC Round between the Black Ducks and Falcons, with the recent tradition beginning in 2013.

WELL, here we are. The 2019 season is in full swing and although only three rounds in, there has been plenty that appeals about a youthful Swan Districts side in its second year under coach Adam Pickering. 

Although we are yet to register that elusive first win, we have played some tantalising football through Rounds 1-3 against quality opposition and although yet to break through, I feel a string of wins is not far away at all. As we all know, bad kicking is bad football and on more than one occasion this year, we have unfortunately been our own worst enemy.

Being a new player to the group came as a surprise to me after having a strong year on a personal front which culminated in my first Lynn Medal as East Fremantle’s fairest and best player for the 2018 season. I had a wonderful relationship with not only the playing group but also the coaching staff, made some friendships for life and thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club. Given the club’s lack of success in recent times, Rob Wiley stood down off his own accord mid-year, a man I consider a dear friend after my time under him. The club eventually appointed recently sacked West Perth coach Bill Monaghan, much to everyone’s surprise.

QUESTION: For the third straight week you sit here knowing that you are only a couple of good plays from winning a game of footy but you are 0-3. How do you get your head around that?
ANSWER: It's a good question and it's a hard one to answer because you are so disappointed about the now that you are 0-3 that it's hard to see how close you are to the wins a lot of the time. All I can tell you is that we have to get better. We are in games, we are doing things right but we just aren’t doing them all right at the moment. It's a really steep learning curve especially for our young guys about how switched on and how good you have to be at league footy or else you don’t win.
