In Their Words – Brandon Erceg Round 2

Friday, April 12, 2019 - 7:22 PM - by Brandon Erceg

ALTHOUGH each season brings with it fresh hopes, burning questions and new faces, the 2019 WAFL season is one which will truly be unique in the history of the competition.

This is thanks largely to the end of the alignment between West Coast and East Perth, which has in turn led to the addition of a new team to the competition, the first time the WAFL has ever seen 10 sides. As a result, there will be extra intrigue surrounding how 2019 will pan out, particularly when also considering the high turnover some clubs have seen.

When looking at the prospects of our club Swan Districts, supporters should be excited. They shouldn’t be disheartened by the loss to South Freo on the weekend, as history has shown Round 1 can throw up unexpected surprises and results which can’t be relied on when predicting how a side will fare for the remainder of the season.

As has been reported, and seen by those at the game, the result could easily have gone our way, and the 22 boys who were out there battled to the final siren, despite being 10 points down with only minutes remaining and looking less and less likely as every second went by. This can only be an encouraging sign.

Tuesday, April 9, 2019 - 10:27 AM - by Chris Pike

SWAN Districts was only one straight kick away from making a winning start to the 2019 WAFL season against South Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday.

It's an even more youthful Swan Districts outfit representing the black-and-whites in 2019 but they went ever so close to making a winning start in Round 1 against the Bulldogs.

In a match with little separating the two teams all day, Swan Districts had the last say when new recruit Josh Simpson took a big pack mark inside-50 as the siren sounded with Swans five points behind.

In Their Words – Alex Howard Round 1

Friday, April 5, 2019 - 1:17 PM - by Alex Howard

IT has been a really long pre-season and I'm pretty thankful to get through it after I've had a couple of injuries in the past. The longer pre-season goes, you never know how it's going to pan out but once the games start it sort of changes everything and you can ease into it and focus on getting to Round 1.

Even though it was a longer pre-season, we pretty much attacked it the same way but it just went a bit longer. The extra running block we do dragged on and you know when you get to that last 2km time trial of pre-season that you're almost done, but that came a lot later this year. But once we got through it we could start focusing on some game style stuff a bit more and how we were actually going to play.

I'm feeling pretty confident with the squad we're coming into the season with. Instead of probably only having 22 players, we've gone to having 32 players who probably could play league any week and we've got a good balance. Getting George Hampson in and then Leigh Kohlmann who is an experienced body up forward, and Riley Garcia and Denzel More, it's a good balance we have now. All the young fellas have taken on board what we have been saying to help them out and to be honest, George Hampson has had a huge impact.

Pickering excited by arrivals, Swans' youth

Thursday, March 28, 2019 - 2:05 PM - by Chris Pike

SWAN Districts coach Adam Pickering is confident that with the additions of the likes of George Hampson and Josh Simpson, and continued emergence of an exciting group of young players that the black-and-whites can rise up the ladder in 2019.

It wasn’t quite the year that Pickering hoped for Swan Districts in his first season as coach with an eighth-place finish, winning just the six games and only one after Round 9, but he is optimistic of a turnaround now in 2019.

There is some more experience lost at Swans following the departures of Todd Banfield, Kirk Ugle, Jarrad Blight and Matthew Rogers, but Pickering is confident in both the senior players retained and the handful of arrivals that they will help signal a significant improvement this season.
