Round 17 WAFL Men’s Match Report

Swan Districts took the challenge right up to the WAFL Men’s ladder leading Peel Thunder at home on Saturday to be leading at three quarter-time before the visitors took control in the final quarter.

Swans played host to a Thunder team at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday who were on a 10-game winning streak to be clear in top spot, but the home team weren’t overawed by the challenge in front of them.

After Peel were leading by eight points at quarter-time and 18 at half-time, Swan Districts hit back with four goals to one in the third term before the Thunder kicked the only seven goals in the last to end up winning 13.10 (88) to 7.4 (46).

Leigh Kohlmann kicked all three of his goals in the third quarter to help Swan Districts to the lead at three quarter-time with Jiah Reidy also kicking two majors.

Josh Cipro finished with 23 possessions and five tackles for Swans with Zane Trew also collecting 22 disposals, Jarvis Pina 21, Chase Loftus 17, Brandon Erceg 16, Leo Steed 16 and Blake Kelly 16.

It took almost nine minutes for the first score of the game and that was a goal to Swan Districts from Jiah Reidy before Peel responded soon after.

The Thunder also added another two goals in the opening quarter with Swans getting one more through Blake Kelly to limit the lead for Peel to eight points by quarter-time.

Reidy kicked a second goal in the second term for Swans but Peel also added another two to be leading by 18 points at the half-time interval.

Leigh Kohlmann then kicked two quick goals early in the third quarter and Otis Harvey added another and suddenly Swan Districts found themselves in front against the ladder leaders.

Kohlmann also added a third goal before three quarter-time and Swans went into the last break with the one-point advantage.

But it was all Peel in the last term with Swan Districts managing just one behind and the Thunder kicking seven goals to turn that one-point deficit into the 42-point victory.

The first game up on Saturday at Steel Blue Oval was in the Reserves and that saw Swan Districts suffer a first loss of the 2026 season with Peel Thunder scoring the 8.13 (61) to 8.8 (56) victory.

Swans were undefeated coming into the contest and started well with three goals to two in the first quarter and then and also had another three in the second to go into half-time with the narrow one-point advantage.

It was then a goal apiece in the third quarter and the scores were all level as a result by three quarter-time before Peel kicked two goals to one in the last term to end up winning by five points.

It was three goals to two in favour of the Swans in the first quarter before three goals apiece in the second term led to the one-point advantage in favour of the black-and-whites.

It was then a goal each in the third quarter with scores all level by three quarter-time before the Thunder kicked the first two goals of the last term and Swans ran out of time despite a late goal to Lewis Zolnier-Owens before Peel held on for the five-point victory.

Zolnier-Owens ended up kicking three goals from eight kicks with seven marks for Swan Districts with Ayden Cartwright racking up 33 possessions, Luke Kelly 27, Max Bain 26, Mitch Roche 22, Finn Taylor 21, Tom Cathcart 21 and Cooper Rullo 20.

McCartney Murdoch also finished up with 16 disposals and 18 hit outs in the ruck.

The Colts contest then took place following the League encounter with Swan Districts defeating Peel Thunder 11.9 (75) to 7.11 (53).

Swans managed to kick the only two goals of the first quarter and then after a goal each in the second term it was the home team leading by eight points at half-time.

Swan Districts then kicked away further in the third quarter with five goals to three and then it was three goals apiece in the last term with Swans securing the 22-point victory.

The result improves Swans to a 5-8 record in the Colts in sixth position to be just one game behind the fifth placed West Perth.

Djayvian Narrier kicked four goals in the win for Swan Districts with Lorenze Cole adding three.

Alon Berman ended up with 22 possessions to go with 15 tackles while Taj Rowe gathered 18 disposals, Hayden Young 17, Lucas Barry 15, Kalum Smith 14 and Jake Mills 14.
