Round 7 WAFL Men’s Match Report
Swan Districts were right in the contest for three quarters at home to Subiaco on Saturday but couldn’t quite go on with the job with the Lions instead scoring the 40-point victory.
The WAFL season resumed on Saturday afternoon at Steel Blue Oval following last week’s State game break with Swans playing host to the Lions.
Swan Districts were leading by a point by quarter-time and then only trailing by four at half-time and 17 at three quarter-time, but Subiaco pulled away with six goals to two in the last term to score the 14.11 (95) to 8.7 (55) victory.
Leigh Kohlmann, Clint Hinchliffe and Leo Steed all kicked two goals apiece for Swans with Steed also having 18 possessions and seven tackles, and Hinchliffe another 19 disposals.
Swan Districts captain Jesse Turner racked up 31 possessions, Zane Trew 30, Jake Pasini 23, Josh Cipro 23, Chase Loftus 20, Jackson McLachlan 19, Bryce Watson 16 and Ayden Cartwright 15 while Lucas Impey returned and had 43 hit outs.
Subiaco did manage the first goal of the game but Swan Districts responded through Leo Steed. Luke Kelly and Zach Provest also added majors in the first term for the home team to be leading by a solitary point at quarter-time.
Subiaco came out and kicked the first three goals of the second quarter before Swans responded through Leigh Kohlmann and a second to Steed to cut the Lions’ lead to just four points by half-time.
Swans drew back level early in the third quarter with a goal to Clint Hinchliffe but the Lions answered with the last two goals to go into three quarter-time on top by 17 points.
The Lions then took control in the final quarter by kicking six goals to two to end up scoring the 40-point victory over the Swans.
The Colts got the day’s action underway at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday and Swan Districts went on to score the empathic 17.9 (111) to 5.6 (36) victory against Subiaco.
It was two goals each in the first quarter but then Swans kicked away with four goals to one in the second term to head into half-time leading by 18 points.
The black-and-whites went on to kick the only five goals of the third quarter and then with six more to two in the last term they went on to secure the 75-point victory to improve to a 2-4 record on the season.
Lebron Yarran kicked four goals in the win with Cooper Dudfield adding three, Jai Debono two, Kalum Smith two and Jake Mills two.
Debono also gathered 26 possessions, Mills 25, Noah Harfouche 22, Alon Berman 19, Smith 19, Yarran 16, Jaxon Ozanne 15 and Lucas Barry 15.
That led into the Reserves match up where Swan Districts produced another strong showing to beat Subiaco 14.13 (97) to 7.9 (51).
Swans were leading by five points at quarter-time after kicking two goals to one before another four goals to three in the second term saw them head into half-time on top by nine points.
Swan Districts were only clinging to a one-point lead at three quarter-time but then dominated the last term with seven goals to one on the way to the 46-point win to remain perfect after six games this season.
Lucas Andrews, Laxon Pitts and Harley Cummings all kicked two goals apiece in the win for the Swans.
Chayse Martinson also racked up 33 possessions, Brad Lynch 28, Jez Rigoni 25, Ben Hewett 23, Otis Harvey 23, Ethyn Kane 22, Dylan Matson 22, Blake Kelly 21, Tom Cathcart 21 and Max Bain 20.
