Grand Final WAFLW Match Report

The Swan Districts’ Rogers Cup team started the day in remarkable fashion winning their Grand Final with a golden point in extra time for the 2026 premiership but it was then more heartbreak in the WAFL Women’s decider.

Both Swan Districts and East Fremantle had set up a pair of Grand Finals on Sunday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval to wrap up the 2026 season.

First up was the Rogers Cup and Khalia Fawcett kicked the premiership winning point in extra time for Swan Districts but it wasn’t quite to be in the WAFLW Grand Final with East Fremantle winning 3.5 (23) to 2.7 (19).

Coming off last year’s one-point heartbreak to Claremont, Swan Districts were the standout team all WAFLW season and were leading all day on Sunday until the Sharks kicked the only two goals of the last quarter to snatch the premiership.

Swan Districts’ goals in the Grand Final were kicked by Taylah Edwards and Shaya Yarran.

Despite the result, Jaime Henry capped her remarkable season for Swans by winning the Lou Knitter Medal having been judged best afield in the Grand Final with 31 possessions and 13 tackles.

Jemma Sly also collected 25 disposals, Luka Davis 22, Kayley King 21, Jess Cox 18, Tamzyn Beros 14 and Summer Ajduk 14 to go with 10 tackles while Lauren Quaife had 11 touches, seven tackles and 30 hit outs in the ruck.

The first five scores of the Grand Final all went the way of Swan Districts including the opening two behinds to leading goalkicker Ash Sharp before the first goal of the contest was kicked by Taylah Edwards at the 14-minute mark.

East Fremantle did respond shortly after thanks to Zoe Keley and that limited the lead for Swans at quarter-time to four points.

The only scores of the second quarter were two behinds to East Fremantle and that had Swan Districts clinging to a two-point advantage heading into half-time.

It then took almost 18 minutes for a goal in the third quarter too but that went the way of Swans thanks to Shaya Yarran and that saw the black-and-whites head into three quarter-time with the nine-point edge.

But East Fremantle would kick the only two goals of the last quarter with the first from Keley and then what proved the premiership winner at the 18-minute mark from Siena Jezierski-Brown.

Grand Final day at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday got underway with the Rogers Cup match up and it was East Fremantle making the flying start with the only eight scores of the first quarter.

Two of those were goals with the Sharks leading by 18 points at quarter-time before Swans did get on the board with a goal in the second quarter thanks to Lara Sherborne.

East Fremantle also added another of their own to be leading by 17 points at half-time.

Swan Districts were working back into the contest, though, and managed two more goals in the third quarter to close that gap back to 12 points at three quarter-time.

Swans then also kicked the only two goals of the last quarter to draw level and that’s where the scores remained when regular time expired.

Immediately the golden score scenario kicked in so play continued and it was Swan Districts who were the team who continued to control the run of the game and kept on attacking.

Eventually it was Khalia Fawcett who received a free-kick for a push in the back deep in the forward pocket. She went back knowing that any score would win Swan Districts the premiership and she managed to kick a behind.

That set off the celebrations for the Swans as they secured a first Rogers Cup premiership since back in 2017 with Lara Sherborne kicking three goals and Adi Griffith two while Micaela Henry, and both Khalia and Keira Fawcett were among the standout performers.
