Round 5 WAFL Men’s Match Report
Swan Districts battled hard all afternoon on the road to Claremont but the Tigers were able to keep their undefeated start to the season going with the 39-point WAFL Men’s victory.
The Round 5 match up took place on Saturday afternoon at Revo Fitness Stadium with Swan Districts on the hunt for a second win of the season and to hand Claremont a first defeat in the process.
The scores were all level by quarter-time but once Claremont got on top in the second quarter they were able to remain there on the way to the eventual 14.17 (101) to 9.8 (62) victory.
Spearhead Leigh Kohlmann returned for Swan Districts for his first appearance of the 2026 season and kicked two goals from three kicks and three marks for the game.
Bryce Watson also kicked two goals to go with nine kicks, five marks and four tackles.
Captain Jesse Turner put in another strong showing to lead his team from the front with 28 possessions to go with five marks, four tackles and two inside-50 entries.
Josh Cipro also picked up 22 disposals, Nathan Blakely 19, Clint Hinchliffe 18, Jarvis Pina 18, Seb Bright 18, Tony Stephens 18, Chase Loftus 15 and Luke Cotellessa 15.
Swan Districts were able to respond to Claremont kicking the first goal with this week’s inclusion, Chase Loftus, making an immediate impact.
Then before quarter-time it was another player in his first appearance of the season, Leigh Kohlmann, who kicked truly and by quarter-time the scores were all locked together at 2.3 (15).
Claremont did manage the first two goals of the second term before Swan Districts responded through Kohlmann and then Zach Provest added another to bring the margin back to just three points.
Claremont did again respond with the last two goals of the half to head into the main break with the 18-point advantage.
The Tigers pushed that out to a 40-point lead with the first four goals of the third quarter in the space of 12 minutes before adding another eight minutes later to be on top by 45.
Swan Districts kept some life in the contest, though, with three goals before three quarter-time thanks to Jackson McLachlan, Bryce Watson and then Watson again.
That had the margin back to 28 points heading in the last term but Claremont was back up 36 with the first goal and despite goals to Jovan Petric and Luke Cotellessa, the Tigers ended up winning by 39 points.
The Colts weren’t quite able to score their first win of the season on Saturday morning with Claremont ending up beating Swan Districts 10.21 (81) to 9.6 (60).
Claremont did have the better of the first term on home turf with eight shots to two on the way to the 16-point lead by quarter-time.
The Swans then fired up in the second period as they were chasing that first win of the season by piling on five goals to head into the half-time break leading by six points.
The Tigers then kicked three goals to one in third quarter to reclaim the lead, and then go on with it from there with three goals to two in final stanza for the 21-point victory to keep Swans winless in the Colts for 2026.
Cooper Dudfield kicked three goals for the Swans with two each to Lebron Yarran and Curtis Winmar.
Jai Debono also racked up 24 possessions, Jaxon Ozanne 17, Yarran 16, Hayden Young 16, Alon Berman 15, Jake Mills 14 and Lloyd Browne 14 while Brayden Lee-Gowland had 14 hit outs in the ruck to go with nine disposals and eight tackles.
The Reserves were next up and Swan Districts stayed undefeated to start the 2026 season with the 10.14 (74) to 7.10 (52) victory against Claremont.
There was two goals apiece in the first quarter with Swans clinging to the three-point lead by quarter-time before it was Claremont with two more goals to just one in the second term.
That saw the Tigers head into half-time with the three-point edge and then the Swans hit back with four goals to one in the third term to open up an 18-point advantage by the last change.
Swan Districts then completed the job with three more goals to two in the final quarter on the way to the 22-point win to improve to 4-0 to start the Reserves season.
Ayden Cartwright had a standout performance again for the Swans with three goals to go with 29 possessions, 10 marks and six entries inside the forward 50.
Latrell Yarran and Ned Reiger also kicked two goals apiece for the black-and-whites.
Blake Kelly collected 37 possessions, Otis Harvey 30, Ben Hewet 28, Lewis Tester 21, Darcy Miller 20, Dylan Matson 18, Tom Cathcart 18 and Ethyn Kane 18.
