Round 14 Women’s Match Report
Swan Districts retained top spot in the WAFL Women’s competition beating East Fremantle by 27 points on Saturday afternoon at Steel Blue Oval.
Swans did need to keep winning to maintain their hold on top spot in the WAFL Women’s competition as finals approach as they hosted an East Fremantle team on Saturday looking to further cement third place.
It was then Swan Districts dominating the first half with five goals to nil on the way to the 8.6 (54) to 4.3 (27) victory to hold on to that first place ahead of Claremont with an 11-2 record.
Ash Sharp, Emily McGuire and Taylah Edwards are all experienced and dangerous forwards for Swan Districts, and each of them kicked two goals in the crucial win in the finish.
Dhara Kerr Medal favourite Jaime Henry then racked up yet another 35 possessions in the midfield for Swans to go with seven tackles and five marks.
Jess Cox also racked up 25 possessions for the black-and-whites, Courtney Ugle 18, Jemma Sly 17, Luka Davis 17, Chloe Reilly 16 against her former team, Summer Yarran 15 and Tamzyn Beros 15 to go with 11 hit outs and six marks.
It took more than 17 minutes into the game for the first goal to be scored and that went the way of Swan Districts courtesy of Taylah Edwards before she added another right on quarter-time to give the home team the 14-point advantage over East Fremantle.
It then took only two minutes into the second term for Swan Districts to add a third goal when Summer Yarran kicked truly and then Emily McGuire caught fire kicking two in less than two minutes.
That ended up seeing the black-and-whites head into the half-time break leading by 32 points having held the Sharks to just the two behinds in the entire first 40 minutes.
Swan Districts also made the perfect start to the second half with an early goal to Ash Sharp inside less than a minute. Even with East Fremantle kicking their first three goals of the game before three quarter-time, Swans were still on top by 20 points.
That lead was soon back out to 32 points for Swans with goals to Sharp and Keira Fawcett to start the fourth quarter on the way to the eventual 27-point victory to retain top spot.
The day’s action at Steel Blue Oval got underway with the Rogers Cup match up and that saw Swan Districts score the 8.6 (54) to 4.1 (25) win against East Fremantle.
Swan Districts held East Fremantle scoreless in the first quarter and kicked two goals themselves and then were still leading by nine points at half-time.
The Swans then made sure of the win with five more goals in the third term and holding the Sharks scoreless. Despite three last quarter goals from East Fremantle, Swans cruised to the eventual 29-point victory.
The win keeps Swans clear in top spot of the Rogers Cup ladder with an 11-2 record with Lara Sherborne kicking three goals, Adi Griffith two and one each to Layla Hagerstrom, Madeline Wright and Madi Fisher.
