Round 13 Men’s Match Report
Swan Districts delivered a strong showing all afternoon at Joondalup on Saturday on the way to recording a fourth win of the WAFL Men’s season with the 25-point victory over West Perth.
Swans headed to HIF Health Insurance Oval to take on the Falcons on Saturday afternoon and after just the three-point lead by quarter-time, took over in the second term.
Swan Districts kicked the only five goals of the second quarter and that put them on the path for the eventual 13.13 (91) to 9.12 (66) victory to improve to a 4-8 record on the season by the end of Round 13.
Leigh Kohlmann made the most of his opportunities in attack for Swan Districts with the spearhead kicking four goals from nine kicks and seven marks.
Chase Loftus also had a standout performance kicking two goals to go with 25 possessions while Caleb Ernst also kicked two along with 14 disposals and six marks.
Captain Jesse Turner racked up another 33 possessions for Swans with Jarvis Pina ending up with 27 disposals, Clint Hinchliffe 25, Bryce Watson 21, Josh Cipro 20, Ben Hewett 18 and Max Chipper 17 while Lucas Impey amassed 46 hit outs in the ruck.
West Perth did have the best of start with two goals inside the first seven minutes before Swan Districts responded thanks to Kade Chalcraft, Leigh Kohlmann and Caleb Ernst to be clinging to a three-point advantage by quarter-time.
Chase Loftus then opened the second term with a goal to push that lead out to nine points before Swans would end up kicking the only five goals of the quarter with Max Chipper, Kohlmann, Ernst and then Kohlmann again providing those.
That saw Swans going into the half-time break with the 29-point advantage before West Perth fired back with two quick goals again to start the second half.
Kohlmann responded with his fourth of the game and Harley Cummings kicked the first goal of his League career in his second appearance and that helped ensure Swans remained on top by 23 points at three quarter-time.
It was then three goals each in the final term with Blake Kelly, Loftus and Ben Hewett delivering for Swans as they secured the 25-point victory away from home.
First up on Saturday afternoon at Joondalup was the Reserves contest and it turned out being a thriller with Swan Districts prevailing 9.7 (61) to 8.8 (56) against West Perth.
It was two goals each in the opening quarter before Swans worked on top in the second term with two goals to one to be leading by six points at half-time.
With West Perth outscoring Swans by four goals to three in the third quarter, scores were all level by three quarter-time but a couple of goals midway through the last term for Swans from Dylan Matson and Lewis Zolnier-Owens secured the eventual five-point win.
The victory keeps Swan Districts perfect with a 10-0 record this season in the Reserves with Zolnier-Owens ending up kicking three goals from his six kicks.
Simon Hayward has previously played 30 League matches with Perth between 2021-24 and has now joined Swans and starred with 39 possessions and 11 tackles.
Lucas Andrews also gathered 26 disposals, Dylan Matson 24, Tom Cathcart 22, Cooper Rullo 22, Ayden Cartwright 20, Jai Debono 20 and McCartney Murdoch 15 to go with 31 hit outs.
The Colts was then last up at HIF Health Insurance Oval on Saturday night and despite a strong start, Swan Districts couldn’t quite keep it going with West Perth kicking 11 goals to three after quarter-time to win 12.12 (84) to 6.9 (45).
Swan Districts kicked three goals to one in the opening quarter to be leading by 12 points at quarter-time but West Perth then kicked four goals to the five behinds from Swans in the second term.
Swans did manage two goals in the third quarter but West Perth added another three before four to one in the last to end up winning by 39 points.
Swan Districts now sit in eighth position in the Colts with a 3-7 record with Ethan Scharenguivel kicking two of the team’s six goals for the night.
Hayden Young finished with 23 possessions for the black-and-whites, Jake Mills 22, Charlie Crotty 21, Taj Allan 19, Noah Harfouche 19, Levi Felder 18 and Tom Martin 15.
