Round 14 WAFL Men’s Match Report
Swan Districts have now won consecutive games for the first time this WAFL Men’s season with the strong showing to beat an East Perth team who has played the last two grand finals by 19 points in NAIDOC Round at Steel Blue Oval.
Swan Districts were back home on Saturday afternoon on the back of last week’s win against West Perth and looking to back that up against the Royals.
Swans did find themselves 11 points down at quarter-time but then kicked seven goals in a dazzling second quarter and then were able to hold out the Royals from there for the 13.11 (89) to 10.10 (70) victory.
Leigh Kohlmann made the most of his chances at full-forward in the win for Swan Districts kicking five goals from his six kicks and three marks for the game.
Zane Trew marked his return with two goals as well to go with 24 possessions with Caleb Ernst the other multiple goalkicker with two to go with 12 disposals, eight tackles and four marks.
Josh Cipro then amassed 34 possessions in the midfield for Swans, Jesse Turner 31, Jarvis Pina 24, Clint Hinchliffe 22, Chase Loftus 20, Blake Kelly 18 and Max Chipper 14 while Lucas Impey had another 38 hit outs in the ruck.
Swan Districts were back home and attempting to win consecutive games for the first time in 2026 but East Perth did kick the first goal early and then it took until the 13-minute mark for Swans to get on the board thanks to Kade Chalcraft.
Leigh Kohlmann added one for Swans too but East Perth had ended up with four up until quarter-time to go into the first break leading by 11 points.
Swans made a flying start to the second quarter with goals to Caleb Ernst and Zane Trew inside the opening two minutes to suddenly hit the front.
Kohlmann then added a couple more goals for the black-and-whites before Clint Hinchliffe added another and then Trew kicked a second to make it a 20-point lead for the home team heading into time-on.
Brad Lynch then made it seven goals to two in the second term for Swan Districts as they went into half-time leading by 18 points.
That became 25 points early in the third quarter with another goal to Kohlmann but East Perth kicked the last two goals of the term to be back within nine by three quarter-time.
Goals to Jesse Turner and a fifth to Kohlmann gave Swans the perfect start to the last quarter with the lead back out to 19 points and eventually to secure the 19-point victory to make it consecutive wins for the first time in 2026.
It was the Colts contest that got proceedings underway at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday morning and it turned out to be a thriller with Swan Districts getting the win 7.5 (47) to 7.4 (46) against East Perth.
It was a goal apiece in the first quarter with scores all level by quarter-time before two goals each in the second term and once more the scores were all square heading into the half-time break.
East Perth did then manage three goals to two in the third quarter to go into three quarter-time leading by five points before Swans kicked the last two goals of the game through Sheldon Pickett and Ethan Scharenguivel to turn an 11-point deficit into the stunning one-point victory.
Cooper Dudfield ended up kicking three goals for Swan Districts and Scharenguivel ended up with two from his four kicks along with kicking the winner at the 25-minute mark.
Taj Allan ended up with 27 possessions, Xavier Daniel 22, Charlie Crotty 18, Alon Berman 15, Noah Harfouche 15, Hayden Young 14, Pickett 13 and David Shanahan 13.
That led into the Reserves match up and it was also a victory for Swan Districts with the eventual 15.5 (95) to 12.9 (81) win against East Perth at Steel Blue Oval.
Swans put their perfect record in the Reserves on the line hosting the Royals and it was the visitors who had the better of the start with four goals to two in the first quarter.
It was then four goals to three in favour of Swan Districts in the second term to see the home team clinging to the five-point advantage by the half-time break.
The two teams then combined for nine goals in the third quarter with five of those kicked by Swans to extend the lead to eight points by three quarter-time.
Swan Districts then completed the 14-point victory with two goals to one in the final quarter to stay undefeated this season and improve to a perfect 11-0 record in the Reserves.
Lewis Zolnier-Owens kicked four goals in the win for Swan Districts with Otis Harvey adding three and Henrick Alforque two.
Lucas Andrews ended up with 25 possessions, Luke Cotellessa 24, Harvey 22, Ayden Cartwright 20, Tyrone Virgo 20, Cooper Rullo 19 and Chayse Martinson 16.
