Round 12 WAFL Men’s Match Report
Swan Districts found themselves 16 points in front in the third quarter to be on target for a fourth win of the WAFL Men’s season only for Subiaco to build their own 16-point lead, and then hold out the black-and-whites to win by four points.
Swans took on the Lions at Leederville’s Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Saturday afternoon and after Subiaco were leading by seven points at quarter-time, the Swans went into half-time on top by two.
Swan Districts were then 16 points up during the third quarter only for Subiaco to lead by that same margin in the fourth term before Swans did kick the last two goals to get back within three.
Subiaco ended up holding on for the 9.6 (60) to 8.8 (56) victory but it was a valiant effort from Swans especially in the absence of Jovan Petric, Seb Bright, Zane Trew, Luke and Blake Kelly, Jake Pasini and Jye Chalcraft.
Clint Hinchliffe continues to be a revelation this season for Swan Districts with his first season playing at WAFL level. He finished with another 20 possessions and two goals to go with five tackles, four marks and four entries inside the forward 50.
Captain Jesse Turner also racked up 31 possessions for Swans, Jarvis Pina 23, Josh Cipro 23, Otis Harvey 23, Luke Cotellessa 21, Bryce Watson 19 and Jackson McLachlan 16.
Subiaco did manage the first goal of the game in the fifth minute but Swan Districts responded soon after thanks to Bryce Watson before the trading of goals continued.
The Lions did manage two more before quarter-time but in between Swans got a second thanks to Jarvis Pina and that helped the visitors stay within seven points at the first change.
Swan Districts were then back within a point with the opening goal of the second quarter thanks to Clint Hinchliffe before Subiaco got back on top with a goal to Jack Petruccelle, and then Swans kicked the last goal of the half through Lucas Impey.
That saw Swan Districts clinging to the two-point lead by half-time before Swans ended up getting out to a 16-point advantage with the first two goals of the third quarter courtesy of Ben Hewett and Ethyn Kane.
Subiaco did respond to the next three goals to be leading by three points at three quarter-time before opening up their own 16-point lead only for Swans to respond with goals from Hinchliffe and Will Collins to get back within three points but fall just four points short of the win.
The day’s action at Sullivan Logistics Stadium got underway on Saturday morning with the Colts match up and that saw Subiaco beat Swan Districts 11.15 (81) to 4.6 (30).
Subiaco managed two goals to one in the first quarter before both teams kicked two each in the second term for the Lions to go into the half-time break leading by eight points.
Subiaco kicked away further with three goals to one in the third quarter and then four to nil in the last to end up handing the Swans the 51-point loss.
Swan Districts are now sitting in seventh position on the Colts ladder with a 3-6 record as a result.
The goalkickers were Lebron Yarran, Noah Harfouche, Tate Johnson and Travis Puertollano.
Charlie Crotty also collected 25 possessions, Jaxon Ozanne 20, Levi Felder 20, Taj Rowe 19 (13 tackles), Jake Mills 18 and Kalum Smith 15 to go with 22 hit outs.
That led into the Reserves match up and that saw Swan Districts maintain their undefeated record this season with the 11.12 (78) to 6.12 (48) victory.
It was a fast start from Swans with four goals to one in the first quarter before another three goals to two in the second stanza which saw the black-and-whites head into the half-time break leading by 25 points.
Subiaco did manage to bring the deficit back to 17 points by three quarter-time before Swan Districts kicked away with three goals to one in the last term on the way to the 30-point victory to improve to a perfect 9-0 record this season.
Lewis Zolnier-Owens ended up kicking four goals for Swans in the win while Latrell Yarran and Kristian Caporn added two apiece.
Tom Cathcart also racked up 31 possessions, Ayden Cartwright 28, Dylan Matson 25, Henrick Alforque 24, Jai Debono 22, Jaxon Pitts 20, Cooper Rullo 19, Lucas Andrews 18 and Simon Hayward 18.
