Round 19 WAFL Preview v East Fremantle
Swan Districts is looking to extend its undefeated run to 10 games while also avoiding a seventh straight defeat to East Fremantle when taking on the Sharks at Joondalup on Saturday afternoon.
Following the Round 17 draw with South Fremantle, Swan Districts got back to winning last week beating Subiaco by 20 points to now have still not lost this WAFL season since going down to Peel Thunder all the way back in Round 7.
Swans will now take on East Fremantle on neutral turf this Saturday afternoon at Joondalup's Pentanet Stadium with the chance to not only consolidate third position, but also leapfrog either or both of East Perth and Peel Thunder in the top two should they lose at the same time.
It's a big game for East Fremantle too with the reigning premiers having now won four straight matches to be solid in fourth position and looking to stay in touch of knocking Swans out of their third spot.
Swan Districts is attempting to snap a six-game losing streak against East Fremantle as well looking for a first win over the Sharks since Round 8, 2021.
That has included some thrilling contests including losses for Swans to the Sharks by just seven, nine, four and two points in those six games.
That included earlier this year in Round 5 at Steel Blue Oval with East Fremantle winning thanks to a goal after the siren from Jackson McDonald to claim the two-point victory.
On that day, Leigh Kohlmann kicked four goals for Swan Districts and Jesse Glass-McCasker three along with Nik Rokahr amassing 34 possessions, Aidan Clarke 31, Jesse Turner 29, Jye Chalcraft 29, Josh Cipro 21 and Jackson McLachlan 20.
Swan Districts captain Jesse Turner is looking forward to another big test against the reigning premiers and is happy to face them on neutral territory.
"It's a massive game obviously with how close ourselves and East Freo are on the ladder, and with how tight all the top six teams are," Turner said.
"So games are like this usually are worth around eight points and then it's a bit different playing them at Joondalup.
"East Freo is kinda getting used to playing at neutral grounds and playing all over the place so for us it's definitely a little different, but in saying that we played at Joondalup not that long ago and won there so we don't mind that ground at all. We're happy to play footy there that's for sure."
Swan Districts kept its undefeated run going last week with the 20-point victory against Subiaco and from that team, Ayden Cartwright, Brodyn Fitzgerald, Tom Smith, Tony Stephens and Luke Taylor have been added to the squad to take on East Fremantle.
The only out at this stage for Swans from that team that beat the Lions is Kristian Caporn.
East Fremantle has now won four straight including an 11-goal win over South Fremantle with Austin Ball, Chadd Dunscombe, Cody Leggett, Ethan Paholski, Griffin Vladich and Mitchell Zadow added to the squad.
Going out for the Sharks are Michael Tassone and Finn Gorringe.
The day's action gets underway at Pentanet Stadium on Saturday morning at 9.15am with the colts match up between Swan Districts and East Fremantle.
Swans come into the contest after a narrow defeat to Subiaco last Saturday at Steel Blue Oval but they remain in fourth position on the colts ladder ahead of taking on a Sharks team three games behind down in sixth spot.
The reserves contest will then get underway at 11.45am with Swans fresh off a 22-point victory last Saturday against Subiaco to improve to a 3-10 record on the season.
They take on an East Fremantle reserves side currently sitting in third position on the ladder with a 9-5 record.
