Round 7 Men’s Preview v Subiaco

The WAFL Men’s season resumes on Saturday with Swan Districts hosting Subiaco and the black-and-whites will be looking to make it six straight wins against the Lions and to stay unbeaten at home against them since 2021.

The WAFL season had a general bye last weekend for the State game which saw Western Australia beat South Australia by 36 points at Leederville’s Sullivan Logistics Stadium.

As part of that game, Jesse Turner and Jiah Reidy were out there from Swan Districts while Jack Mayo, Galen Savigni and Stefan Giro were playing and representing Subiaco.

Now in the space of seven days they go from being triumphant State teammates to rivals on Saturday when they clash at Steel Blue Oval with the League encounter getting underway at 2:30pm.

Swan Districts have now won the last five matches against Subiaco including both encounters back in 2025 by a combined 93 points.

Swans now haven’t lost to the Lions since a four-point defeat in Round 7, 2023, at Sullivan Logistics Stadium and they’ve now won the last four against Subiaco at Steel Blue Oval.

Swan Districts captain Jesse Turner is looking forward to the challenge Subiaco on Saturday and will be doing all he can to keep the recent winning run against them going.

“They’re obviously playing some really good footy and they’re sitting in the top five at the moment, and obviously Jarrad (Schofield) their coach has won a lot of premierships in the WAFL and spent a lot of years in the AFL,” Turner told 91.3 SportFM.

“He’s got a lot of knowledge and he knows what he’s doing, and with the personnel Subi have got, they had a lot of injuries last season and they’ve been able to get a lot of those boys back and have done some recruiting.

“They’ve started the season real strong with some players in there that I played with on the weekend like Jack Mayo and Stef Giro, and they’re playing some really good footy.

“We know in order to beat them we’re going to have to play four quarters which to start the season was something we weren’t doing well enough, and that’s why we lost a few games but we felt that against the Sharks we played pretty close to four quarters.

“Hopefully we can keep that momentum going and we feel if we play four quarters it gives us a good chance to win.”

Two weeks ago prior to the State game break saw Swan Districts beat East Fremantle and from that team, Brandon Erceg and Lucas Impey return to take on Subiaco this Saturday.

Going out for Swans are Jarvis Pina and Nathan Blakely.

Subiaco beat West Perth two weeks ago and from that side Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves returns to play against Swan Districts this Saturday with Hudson Walker going out for the Lions.

The day’s action at Steel Blue Oval gets underway on Saturday morning with Swan Districts hosting Subiaco in the Colts with the game getting underway at 9:15am.

Coming into Round 7 and Swan Districts currently sit on a 1-4 record in the Colts and are coming off a strong 39-point win against East Fremantle two weeks ago also at Steel Blue Oval.

They are coming up against a Subiaco team holding a 1-4 record also in the Colts so far in 2026 while having lost by 14 points a fortnight ago against West Perth at Joondalup.

That leads into the Reserves contest that gets underway also between the Swans and Lions at 11:45am at Steel Blue Oval.

Swan Districts have won all fives matches so far in the Reserves this season by an average of 53 points including a 117-point hammering of East Fremantle prior to the State game break.

Subiaco arrives having won just one of five matches in the Reserves season so far including losing to West Perth by 29 points two weeks ago at Joondalup.
