Round 3 WAFLW Match Report

It was an enjoyable Friday night sojourn to The Good Grocer Park for Swan Districts with both the Rogers Cup and WAFL Women’s teams scoring impressive Round 3 victories against East Fremantle.

The Swans took on the Sharks in the double at Shark Park on Friday evening with the Rogers Cup starting off proceedings with the nine-point victory before the WAFL Women’s team kept their impressive start going with the 23-point win.

On the back of making the grand final last year in the WAFL Women’s competition and losing in heartbreaking fashion by a solitary point to Claremont, Swan Districts had won with two strong performances to start the season ahead of taking on East Fremantle on Friday.

And after the Sharks led by four points at quarter-time, Swans worked on top from there to lead by four themselves at half-time, by six at three quarter-time and to end up securing the 7.9 (51) to 4.4 (28) victory to improve to 3-0 on the season.

It was all single goal scorers for Swan Districts with one apiece to Ashley Sharp, Summer Yarran, Summer Ajduk, Jaime Henry, Chloe Reilly, Taylah Edwards and Kayley King.

Henry continued her blistering form in the midfield for Swans racking up another 31 possessions with eight tackles while Naomi Baker was a standout again with 21 disposals, five marks and five tackles.

Reilly had an enjoyable night against her former team with 18 possessions as well while Luka Davis collected 21 disposals, Jess Cox 19, Tamzyn Beros 16, Grace Hirst 15, Ajduk 14, Jemma Sly 12 and Lauren Quaife 12 in the ruck to go with 34 hit outs and three tackles.

East Fremantle kicked the first goal of the WAFL Women’s contest after less than three minutes thanks to Breanna Wills but the Swans responded soon after when Kayley King kicked truly.

But it was the Sharks who had the last say of the first term with a late goal to Cienna Leslie which saw the home team on top by four points at quarter-time.

It was Swan Districts who managed the first goal of the second quarter and when Summer Ajduk kicked truly at the nine-minute mark, it put her team in front.

Taylah Edwards was able to stretch that lead to 10 points before the Sharks did get a goal back just before half-time to cut the Swans lead at the break to just four points.

That advantage was soon out to 12 to start the second half with a goal to Summer Yarran but again East Fremantle got one back to make it just a six-point margin by three quarter-time.

It was then all Swan Districts in the final term, though, with goals to Chloe Reilly against her former team, Jaime Henry and Ashley Sharp in the space of 10 minutes to blow the game apart and secure the 23-point victory.

It was the Rogers Cup match up that got things underway on Friday afternoon at the Good Grocer Park and it was the Sharks who had the better of the start with three goals to one in the first quarter.

Swan Districts then kicked the only goal of the second term and by half-time that had cut the East Fremantle advantage back to just six points.

The Swans then fired up with three goals to one in the third quarter, and then another two in the last term on the way to securing the 7.8 (50) to 6.5 (41) victory against the Sharks.

Lara Sherborne and Lillyanah Baker kicked two goals each in the victory for Swan Districts while Zoe Tickner had five scoring shots and finished with one goal and four behinds.

The other goals were kicked by Madi Fisher and Macey Johnson while Shanae Morisey, Shaya Yarran and Frankie Best were among the other standout performers in the win.
