Round 2 WAFL Match Report

For three quarters Swan Districts were on track to beat the grand finalists in the WAFL Men’s competition of the past two years and despite not quite completing the job, there was a lot to like including four goals from Zach Provest.

Swan Districts arrived at Leederville’s Sullivan Logistics Stadium chasing a first win of the season and they made a blistering start with three goals in just over four minutes to open the game.

Swans went on to kick six of the first seven goals of the contest as well and were still leading by 17 points at half-time and nine at three quarter-time, but East Perth kicked the only five goals of the final term to end up winning 13.12 (90) to 10.10 (70).

Provest made a blistering start to the contest for Swan Districts and finished up kicking four goals from his five kicks and four marks while Jiah Reidy also kicked two goals in the opening quarter.

Zane Trew amassed 28 possessions in the game for the Swans with Josh Cipro finishing with 25 disposals, Bryce Watson 21, Jesse Turner 21, Luke Kelly 20, Clint Hinchliffe 19, Kade Chalcraft 17 and Jez Rigoni 16 while Lucas Impey had 33 hit outs with nine touches in the ruck.

Chasing a first win of the season, Swan Districts made a flying start away from home against last year’s grand finalists starting with a goal to Zach Provest inside the opening minute.

Jackson McLachlan added another just over a minute later and Provest then kicked a second and suddenly Swans had three goals on the board already in fewer than five minutes.

They kicked the next goal of the game as well thanks to Jiah Reidy at the 14-minute mark and it took until the 22-minute mark for East Perth to get a first through Sebit Kuek.

Swan Districts answered just before quarter-time with a second to Reidy and that saw them go into the quarter-time break feeling good and with a 22-point edge.

Swans kept that momentum going with the first goal of the second quarter as well with Provest kicking a third already in the game to make it a 28-point margin.

It was back to a 22-point lead later in the quarter with Leo Steed kicking the first goal of his WAFL career as well with the black-and-whites still leading by 17 points at the half-time interval.

Jovan Petric kicked an early second half goal as well to keep Swans leading by 17 points but the Royals kicked the next three goals to claim the lead heading into time-on of the third term.

Swans did get back in front, though, and a goal to Jehb O’Donohue and then a fourth to Provest saw them still leading by nine points at three quarter-time.

However, it was all East Perth in the final quarter with Swans managing just the three behinds and the Royals kicking five goals to come from behind and end up winning by 20 points.

The reserves contest got proceedings underway at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Saturday morning and it would end up with a strong win for Swan Districts who beat East Perth 13.12 (90) to 9.5 (59).

Swans kicked two goals to one in the first quarter on the way to the nine-point lead by quarter-time before another four goals to three in the second term to go into the half-time break with the 15-point advantage.

It was another four goals to two in the third quarter in favour of the Swans and then three each in the last term with the black-and-whites going on to secure the 31-point victory away from home.

Ayden Cartwright had a day out for Swans in the win finishing with six goals to go with 27 possessions, nine marks and six inside-50 entries.

Luke Cotellessa also kicked two goals to go with 22 disposals and six tackles.

Blake Kelly ended up with 33 disposals, Brad Lynch 24, Darcy Miller 24, Otis Harvey 22, Brodyn Fitzgerald 22, Ethyn Kane 20 and Ben Hewett 17.

It was a Colts Super Round across the weekend with Swan Districts playing East Perth at Joondalup’s HIF Health Insurance Oval on Sunday morning, and it was a thriller in the finish with the Royals prevailing 12.6 (78) to 11.9 (75).

Swan Districts got off to a strong start with four goals to two in the first quarter and then with another three to two in the second, it was the black-and-whites going into the half-time break leading by 19 points.

The Swans were still leading by 12 points at three quarter-time but East Perth then produced a big final term with four goals to one and that was enough to overrun Swan Districts for the three-point victory.

Lorenze Cole, Kishorn Stack and Cooper Dudfield all kicked two goals apiece for Swans with Dudfield also ending up with 14 possessions, eight marks and four entries inside the forward 50.

Sheldon Pickett finished the game with 24 possessions for Swan Districts with Jai Debono gathering 23 disposals, Reeve Sheldon 23, Kalum Smith 19, Charlie Crotty 18, Jake Mills 18 and Jaxon Ozanne 17.
