Round 1 WAFL Women’s Match Report

Swan Districts made an impressive start to the WAFL Women’s season with Emily McGuire and Summer Yarran combining for five goals in the 30-point win against East Perth on Saturday.

Round 1 of the WAFL Women’s season got underway for Swan Districts against East Perth at Leederville’s Sullivan Logistics Stadium in warm conditions on Saturday afternoon.

It was the first game for the Swan Districts women’s team under new coach Jason Burton with Summer Yarran making her debut while it also marked the return of Jaime Henry and Ashley Sharp.

Swans made the finals again last year and were looking for a strong start to the 2025 season up against a team they have yet to lose against in the WAFL Women’s competition, and despite being on the road, the black-and-whites did start well.

Emily McGuire took a strong one-on-one contested mark when isolated with her East Perth opponent six minutes into the game after the set up pass from Yarran.

She slotted her first goal of the afternoon to put Swans in front and then they were leading by three points at quarter-time thanks to the returning Sharp kicking truly after the siren had sounded with a set shot.

It took almost 14 minutes into the second quarter for either team to score a goal and it went to Swan Districts, once again thanks to McGuire. This time she swooped on the ground ball and snapped around her body to put her team up by 10 points.

Then just before the half-time siren sounded, Yarran marked strongly at the top of the goal square and went back to kick truly to give Swans the 15-point lead at the main break.

There was a goal apiece in the third quarter with the major for Swans coming courtesy of Yarran when she once again marked strongly and went back to convert.

That ensured Swan Districts were still leading by 15 points at three quarter-time before then kicking the only two goals of the final term.

The first came from Yarran when she pounced on the ball and snapped it around her body before Hope Ugle-Hayward capped things off for the 7.6 (48) to 2.6 (18) victory for Swans to start the season in impressive fashion.

Emily McGuire was dangerous deep in attack every time the ball was in her vicinity and she kicked three goals in the win for Swan Districts from seven kicks and four marks.

Debutant Summer Yarran was also lively up forward to kick two goals from five kicks.

It was an impressive on-ball unit Swans put out there too led by Lauren Quaife in the ruck who finished with 14 possessions and 22 hit outs.

Carys D’Addario picked up right where she left off this year with 25 possessions and eight inside-50 entries with Luka Davis collecting 20 disposals, Jaime Henry 19, Kayley King 17, Jemma Sly 13, Kyah Chirichilli 12 and Isabella Edgley 12.

Meanwhile, the Swan Districts Rogers Cup team also got off to a winning start to open the new season beating East Perth 8.6 (54) to 6.4 (40).

Swans kicked away with five goals to one in the second quarter to be leading by 23 points at half-time on the way to the eventual 14-point victory.

Keira Fawcett starred in the win with four goals while Olivia Rasenberg added two goals for the black-and-whites with Madison Fisher also kicking two majors.
