Round 6 Men’s Match Report v Subiaco

Swan Districts might have been yet to win in 2025 this WAFL season heading into Saturday night’s clash with Subiaco, but they sure did it in style by kicking 20 goals and scoring the emphatic 75-point victory.

Not only had Swans lost the first five games of the 2025 season, but scoring had been an issue with them unable to kick more than eight goals in a game and then losing key forward targets Leigh Kohlmann and Evan Smith this week.

However, it was a transformed Swan Districts outfit under lights on Saturday night at Sullivan Logistics Stadium and it was a team full of run, fast ball movement, a ferocious attack on the contest and then a varied options of attacking threats inside the forward 50.

In the end, Swans kicked 12 goals to just one from the Lions across the second and third quarters which set up the eventual 20.13 (133) to 9.4 (58) victory.

Seb Bright ended up having a day out in the forward-line for Swans kicking four goals from 17 possessions, six marks and seven tackles in his first league appearance since Round 8 last year.

Jehb O’Donohue was also a surprise move forward from coach Andrew Pruyn and he kicked two goals as did Ben Hewett, Jiah Reidy and Otis Harvey.

Aidan Clarke was prolific and explosive through the middle for Swans with 39 possessions while Jye Chalcraft picked up 39 disposals, Jesse Turner 31, Jarvis Pina 26, Jackson McLachlan 21 and Connor Blakely 17.

Swan Districts were hunting a first win of the season and they made the perfect start with a goal to Luke Kelly inside the first two minutes.

In the end it was four goals apiece in the first quarter in an exciting opening to the Saturday night contest with the other goals for Swans coming courtesy of Lewis Tester, Jiah Reidy and the returning Seb Bright.

Swans were clinging to the two-point lead but then blew the game completely open with a blistering second quarter beginning with a couple of quick goals to open proceedings from Bright.

Zane Trew, Jehb O’Donohue, Otis Harvey, Ben Hewett and then O’Donohue all added goals as well leading into half-time which saw Swan Districts in control leading by 40 points.

Tony Notte then enjoyed his move to the forward-line with the games record holder kicking the first goal of the second half before Aidan Clarke added another. Harvey then kicked a second and so did Hewett with the black-and-whites ended up leading by a monstrous 75 points three quarter-time.

Both teams then kicked four goals each in the last quarter just as they did in the first but Swan Districts went on to open their account for the 2025 season in the most emphatic fashion with the 75-point victory.

First up on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Logistics Stadium was the Colts contest with a narrow 11.12 (78) to 9.15 (69) victory for Subiaco against Swan Districts.

Subiaco kicked three goals to the two from Swan Districts in the first quarter and it was two goals from either team in the second term with the Lions narrowly leading at half-time by three points.

Subiaco were then able to open up a 24-point lead by three quarter-time before Swans kicked four goals in the last quarter but fell nine points short of the Lions in the finish.

Leon Kickett kicked three goals for Swan Districts from 13 kicks while laying seven tackles with Kalum Smith also kicking two goals.

Soren Feast picked up 22 possessions, Blake Kelly 19, Jai Debono 17, Liam Hrabar 16, Cooper Rullo 16, Ezekiel Hewett 15 and Jamie Sidebottom 15.

Next up was the Reserves clash and Swan Districts suffered a first loss of the 2025 season with Subiaco scoring the narrow 9.11 (65) to 8.13 (61) victory.

Subiaco were leading by five points at quarter-time and then still clinging to a four-point lead by half-time before Swan Districts kicked three goals to two in the third term to go into the last break leading by four points.

The Lions were then able to kick two goals to one in the final quarter and in the end they won by four points to hand Swans a first defeat of the reserves season.

Ayden Cartwright continues to bang down the door for a call up to the League team for Swans with another 35 possessions and two goals while Kristian Caporn also kicked two goals from his four kicks.

Luke Cotellessa also racked up 29 disposals for the black-and-whites, Ethyn Kane 19, Brodyn Fitzgerald 17 and Mitch Roche 17 while Tom Smith was terrific in the ruck with 24 touches and 30 hit outs.
