Round 19 WAFL Men’s Match Report

Swan Districts got back within two points in the last quarter but couldn’t quite hit the front on the road to Perth on Saturday despite 40 possessions from Josh Cipro and another four goals from Leigh Kohlmann.

The Swans played their last home game at Steel Blue Oval last Saturday and now finish the WAFL Men’s season with two matches away from home starting on Saturday against Perth at Mineral Resources Park.

Swans did build some momentum to get back within two points early in the fourth quarter but the Demons responded from there to end up securing the 14.10 (94) to 11.9 (75) victory.

Leigh Kohlmann kicked another four goals on the day for Swan Districts from six kicks and four marks to give him 30 goals in 13 matches now for the season.

Jiah Reidy and Luke Cotellessa also kicked two goals with the latter ending up with 20 possessions, eight tackles and five marks.

Josh Cipro had a day out in the midfield to finish with 40 possessions for the Swans while Jarvis Pina compiled 34 disposals, Blake Kelly 30, Jesse Turner 22, Bryce Watson 21, Clint Hinchliffe 20, Brandon Erceg 19 and Lucas Impey 30 hit outs in the ruck.

Perth made a fast start to the game with the first two goals in the opening four minutes before Leigh Kohlmann got Swan Districts on the board.

The Demons were then able to continue their flying start with another four goals leading into quarter-time which saw them head into the first break leading by 32 points.

The Swans did start the second quarter strongly with goals to Jiah Reidy and Caleb Ernst and then Luke Cotellessa added another soon after to get back within 14 points.

Clint Hinchliffe also closed the first half with another goal and that had Swans within 21 points of the Demons heading into the main break.

Cotellessa kicked a second goal to open the second half as well and Reidy and Kohlmann both added a second each before three quarter-time to bring the margin all the way back to 10 points.

Swans also made a fast start to the last quarter responding to a goal for Perth with a third to Kohlmann and another to Luke Kelly to get back within three points.

Perth did manage to respond from there and ended up kicking five goals in the last quarter to end up scoring the 19-point victory.

It was the Colts that got things underway on Saturday morning at Mineral Resources Park and Swan Districts scored the thrilling 9.4 (58) to 8.7 (55) victory against Perth.

It was two goals apiece in the first quarter before Swans added another three to the two from the Demons in the second to go into the half-time break leading by four points.

It was another two goals apiece in the third term and that saw Swan Districts clinging to a four-point advantage still by three quarter-time.

Kalum Smith kicked the first goal of the last quarter to push Swans back out to a 10-point lead but Perth kicked two goals quickly to hit the front. The last goal of the game was kicked by Djayvian Narrier at the 19-minute mark to secure the three-point victory.

It’s a big result in the context of the season too in the Colts for Swan Districts to keep them an outside chance of playing finals which will now take a monster win this Saturday against the top placed East Fremantle while also relying on West Perth suffering a significant loss to Perth.

Ethan Scharenguivel kicked two goals in the win for the Swans with Xavier Daniel racking up 25 possessions, Hayden Young 19, Jake Mills 17, Ethan Wulf 15, Noah Harfouche 15 and Kalum Smith 14 to go with 17 hit outs.

The Reserves contest was up next and that saw Perth come away with the 10.14 (74) to 8.14 (62) victory against Swan Districts.

Swans made a flying start with four goals to one in the first quarter but then the Demons hit back with three goals to one in the second term to cut the Swan Districts lead back to 10 points at half-time.

Perth kicked two goals to one in the third period but Swans were still clinging to the four-point lead at three quarter-time before the Demons did kick four goals to two in the last to end up scoring the 12-point win.

Swan Districts had already wrapped up the minor premiership before the last two rounds and to remain two games clear now in top spot at 13-2 with one round of the home and away season to go.

Basil Hart ended up kicking two goals for the Swans with Ayden Cartwright finishing with 38 possessions, Kade Chalcraft 26, Jake Pasini 23, Tyrone Virgo 23, Dylan Matson 22, Cooper Rullo 21, Lucas Andrews 20, Finn Taylor 20 and Chayse Martinson 20.
