Preliminary Final Preview v Peel Thunder
It's going to be a massive day at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday beginning with the Swan Districts colts in action in a preliminary final against Subiaco before the afternoon wraps up with the league team battling Peel Thunder for a Grand Final spot.
While you never want to lose a final, the great positive from the position Swan Districts put themselves in this season was that even with last Saturday's second semi-final loss to East Perth, they have a second chance to now book in a Grand Final place.
The added bonus is that Sunday's preliminary final against Peel will be played at Steel Blue Oval and it's set to be another massive occasion at the Bassendean venue.
The last two preliminary finals that Swan Districts have played in also took place at Steel Blue Oval and going back to 2010 it was a remarkable atmosphere with 11,251 people turning out for the win against East Perth and then the incredible Grand Final win a week later.
Two years later and Swans also hosted East Fremantle with a crowd of 5342 turning out with the Sharks prevailing on that occasion, but another big crowd can be expected to turn out once again with Swan Districts attempting to reach a first Grand Final since 2010.
Swans and Peel are certainly familiar with playing one another recently too meeting back in Round 20 where the Thunder won by 31 points before the black-and-whites won by 17 points two weeks later in the qualifying final.
Both those games took place in Mandurah and now they clash for the third time in five weeks with the reward a spot in the Grand Final against East Perth next Sunday at Optus Stadium.
Swan Districts run-with gun Jehb Donohue isn’t afraid to dare to dream of what a win on Sunday in front of what is sure to be a big crowd at Bassendean will mean.
"I definitely do think about how awesome it would be to play in a WAFL Grand Final, but in saying that you can't take anything for granted and can't look past everything we have to do this week to get that chance," O'Donohue said.
"It's a massive achievement just to get to a WAFL prelim so I'm grateful and very honoured to be able to play in this game and especially at home in front everyone which will be awesome.
"The cherry on top will be to get the job done and to head off to Optus and that will be an amazing point in my career, and all our careers to make it to a Grand Final and hopefully win it.
"You think about the lifelong memory and friendship that would create, but we know we have to focus on the job this week first."
The day will begin at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday morning with the colts preliminary final which also features Swan Districts up against Subiaco with the game to get underway at 8.50am.
Swans finished the season in the colts in fourth position and have now won two thrilling finals match ups to book a place in the preliminary final and getting the bonus of playing it at home on Sunday morning.
First up and Swan Districts beat Perth by two points in the elimination final in Mandurah and then last week it was a shock late move by coach John Armstrong to throw regular defender Tom Cathcart forward that proved a masterstroke.
He ended up kicking the last two goals of the first semi-final, and his first two goals in two years in the colts with Swan Districts, and the black-and-whites won by five points as a result to book in a place in the preliminary final.
Swans take on a Subiaco team who finished the home and away season in third spot before beating West Perth in a qualifying final and then losing to Claremont in the second semi-final.
The winner will advance to a Grand Final next Sunday at Optus Stadium against Claremont with the Swan Districts colts looking to get a chance to win a first premiership since 2021.
