New Bassendean Swans Youth Hub

Thursday, July 25, 2024 - 2:06 PM

Swan Districts Football Club will further boost its social impact with the Bassendean Youth Service now being managed and operated by the club. The youth centre, located under the heritage listed McDonald Stand at Steel Blue Oval, has been operated by the Town of Bassendean since 1989, and in a new partnership with the Town, Swans will re-launch the youth centre as the Swans Youth Hub on Tuesday 30 July 2024.

The club has appointed Kelly Charlett as its Perth Youth Service Coordinator. With Kelly’s background in working with young people at risk as well as being a local Bassendean resident, she will bring a fresh feel and passion for young people to feel welcome and safe, and empower them to navigate their lives with the club’s full support.

“I'm excited to team up with our youth to shape the future of Swans Youth Hub and bring their needs and dreams to life and connect our youth with the services they need and workshops they want.”

“No matter where you're from or what your goals are, drop in and say hi, as together, we can create an inclusive community where every youth member is seen, heard, and valued.”

Having operated the Onslow Youth Shed since 2010, the club has full approval and support from Department of Communities to take on this exciting project, and have it located at club’s home for the past 90 years, Steel Blue Oval Bassendean. This provides another great opportunity for more people to feel the sense of belonging that comes with the Swans’ family.

Swan Districts Director of Social Impact Ian Westmore says, “the club understands the community influence and impact we can have alongside our men’s, women’s and All Abilities football programs, and we take pride in having the resources, people and trust to empower others from all backgrounds to create better futures.”

“The Swans Youth Hub will now become a part of our broader strategy engaging with young people and walking with them as mentors helping them build confidence, resilience and skills in a safe and welcoming place to live fulfilling lives.”

The club continues to maximise its personal and community impact across five key social impact outcomes, positively influencing physical and mental health, individual development, social and community development, and the environment.

The Swans Youth Hub will provide a platform to also bring school based Swans Elevate sessions, Swans Café barista training, and other Swans social impact programs to a wider range of people. The Swans Youth Hub will open Tuesdays to Fridays from 3pm-6pm and on Saturdays from midday to 4pm.

The Town of Bassendean will continue to provide youth programming, while shifting focus towards building strategic partnerships. This new direction will enable the Town to offer advocacy and support to a broader demographic, extending their impact. The collaboration with Swan Districts Football Club aligns perfectly with this vision, ensuring that the community benefits from a wider range of services and support.
