Round 14 WAFL Preview v West Perth

Friday, July 5, 2024 - 4:26 PM

Swan Districts is the hottest team in the WAFL coming into Saturday's trip to Joondalup's Pentanet Stadium to take on a West Perth team desperate for a victory.

Swans come into the NAIDOC Round match up on a five-game winning streak as they head to Joondalup to take on a Falcons team who have now lost their previous five matches.

Swan Districts has now improved to fourth position on the WAFL ladder on the back of the past five victories but winning at Joondalup is always a challenge especially with the Falcons needing a bounce back win to avoid a sixth straight defeat.

It will be the second meeting between the two teams this season with the first coming back in Round 8 which saw Swans score the 13-point victory at Steel Blue Oval.

In that win, Tom Edwards kicked four goals for the black-and-whites with Brad Lynch adding two while Jye Chalcraft racked up 35 possessions, Nik Rokahr 29, Jackson McLachlan 24, Jarvis Pina 23, Aidan Clarke 22 and Jehb O'Donohue 20.

That made it consecutive wins for Swans against the Falcons going back to the win in Round 11 last year as well, but prior to that and West Perth had won seven of the previous eight meetings between the two teams.

Swan Districts beat West Coast by 24 points last Sunday and from that team, there is just the one change with Leigh Kohlmann back into the side having initially gone out with a concussion while leading the Bernie Naylor Medal as the league's leading goalkicker.

Going out of the team is the unlucky Max Chipper.

West Perth is looking to hit back from a loss to Perth last Saturday with Darcy Dixon and Sasha Kernutt back into the team.

Going out for the Falcons are Tristan Hobley and Riley Sprigg.

Swan Districts captain Jesse Turner had another spectacular performance last week against West Coast with 30 possessions and two goals, but he is fully aware how tough West Perth always is no matter the current form situation.

"Regardless of whether we play them up at their ground or we play them at Steel Blue, there always seems to be a lot of supporters that come out which is great," Turner said.

"Especially our last few contests against each other have been quite close as well and the one we had earlier in the season was a close game. So I think the supporter bases from both sides really enjoy the contests and this game will be no different."

While Turner likes how well Swans are now playing to be on a five-game winning streak and to be sitting fourth at 7-4, he knows how quickly it can change and how they need to keep the roll going.

"With how close the competition is, which is great, if we were to lose one or two games in-a-row we could be out of the five just like that," Turner added.

"So we know how important every game is and even though West Perth's results don’t show it, they've been more than competitive and they've lost a lot of close games. I think their last two home games, they lost to the two top teams, Peel and East Perth, by under a goal.

"We know that going up there is not going to be easy at all so we're going to have to play some of our best footy if we want to come away with the win."

The day gets underway on Saturday morning at Pentanet Stadium with the colts contest between Swan Districts and West Perth at 9.15am.

Swans are back in action after the break last week and come into the contest in fourth position on the ladder with a 5-4 record.

The reserves match up follows at 11.45am with Swan Districts looking for a second win of the season while West Perth is in the same position entering the contest with a 1-9 record.
