Round 16 WAFLW Match Report
Taylah Edwards kicked six goals and Swan Districts geared up for the WAFLW finals with a thumping 59-point victory on the road to Peel Thunder on Saturday afternoon.
Swans just needed to win on Saturday at Lane Group Stadium to guarantee another finals appearance in the WAFLW in 2024.
Swan Districts didn’t need much time to take charge of the contest and ended up kicking the only seven goals of the first half to set up the eventual 10.9 (69) to 1.4 (10) victory against the Thunder.
The win means that Swans finish the WAFLW season in fourth position on the ladder with an 8-6 record to set up a first semi-final match up this coming Sunday against West Perth at Joondalup's Pentanet Stadium.
It was a day out in attack for Taylah Edwards in the big win for Swan Districts as she kicked six goals from 19 possessions, four marks and four tackles.
Young gun Sienna Gerardi also stepped up to kick three goals in the win for Swans with the other goal courtesy of Emily McGuire.
The stunning form in the midfield of Lily Paterson continued as well for the black-and-whites as she racked up 37 possessions to go with six marks and four inside-50 entries.
Hope Ugle-Hayward also gathered 20 disposals, Kayley King 18, Isabella Edgley 18, Luka Davis 17, Sienna Pollard 17 and Jorgina Kean 15 along with 10 tackles and five entries inside the forward 50.
Swan Districts just needed to win the game in Mandurah to lock away a finals position and things got off to the perfect start with the first goal of the contest in less than a minute thanks to Emily McGuire.
It took almost 15 minutes for another goal but that also went the way of Swans courtesy of Taylah Edwards. That started a run of three goals in less than five minutes with Sienna Gerardi adding another and Edwards a second.
That saw Swans leading by 27 points already by quarter-time and it was Gerardi who kicked her second of the day. Edwards and Gerardi were then both able to add their third goals of the half just before the break and the black-and-whites were leading by 46 at half-time.
Swan Districts then made the perfect start to the third quarter too with a goal to Edwards in just over 30 seconds to push the lead out to 52 points.
Peel did manage to kick the next goal, but that would be the Thunder's only goal of the game with Edwards adding two more before three quarter-time as the lead for Swan Districts blew out to 60 points.
There wasn’t a goal kicked by either team in the last quarter with Swans ending up winning by 59 points to lock away a finals berth.
Swan Districts just needed to win its last Rogers Cup game as well to guarantee a finals appearance in 2024 and they were able to do just that with the 5.6 (36) to 3.3 (21) win against Peel Thunder in Mandurah.
The result means that Swans finish the season with an 8-6 record to be in fourth position and now be preparing to take on Subiaco in a first semi-final this Sunday at Joondalup's Pentanet Stadium.
Madison Fisher ended up kicking two goals in the win for Swan Districts with singles to Indyana Bird, Summer Ajduk and Adi Griffith.
