Round 16 WAFLW Preview v Peel Thunder
Swan Districts can guarantee a WAFLW finals appearance by beating Peel Thunder in Mandurah on Saturday afternoon in the last round of the 2024 home and away season.
The equation is simple for Swan Districts coming into the last game of the season on Saturday when they take on Peel at Lane Group Stadium with the game getting underway at 11.05am.
All Swans have to do is win the game and they are guaranteed of taking part in the finals again in 2024 with the black-and-whites coming into the last round sitting in fourth position with a 7-6 record.
That has them a game and percentage clear of the fifth placed South Fremantle so for Swans to miss finals not only would they need to lose to the Thunder, but also the Bulldogs would have to beat the minor premiers East Fremantle and do so by enough to make up the percentage gap.
However, Swans can take any of that out of the equation by beating a Peel team who comes into the last round sitting in bottom spot of the WAFLW ladder with a 1-12 record on the season and having only averaged scoring 15 points a game in 2024.
The last time the two teams met was all the way back in Round 2 and that was a thumping 10.13 (73) to 1.4 (10) victory for Swan Districts against Peel at Steel Blue Oval.
In that victory, Courtney Zappara kicked five goals for Swans with Tayla Thorn adding two while Carys D'Addario racked up 24 possessions, Lily Paterson 24, Taylah Edwards 19, Naomi Baker 19 and Emma Humphries 17.
There are two changes to the Swan Districts team for the last round of the home and away season with Jorjina Kean and Emma Nanut coming into the side to take on Peel.
Going out from the Swans team that beat West Perth last week is Carys D'Addario and Adi Griffith.
Peel will be looking for a strong finish to the season on its home deck with Caitlin Cooper, Riley Fisher, Jaya Ingram and Jessica Jones coming into the squad.
The only out so far for the Thunder from the team that lost last week to South Fremantle is Nakia Jilley.
Meanwhile, the last round of the Rogers Cup season will also see Swan Districts take on Peel Thunder at Lane Group Stadium with the game getting underway at 9am on Saturday morning.
Coming into the last round and Swans are sitting in fourth position on the Rogers Cup ladder so it is their finals spot to lose.
Swans just need to win on Saturday in Mandurah and they will be playing finals in 2024 and that looks like being a first semi-final match up against Subiaco.
Swan Districts is taking on a Peel team who is out of the finals hunt with a 2-11 record on the season but the Thunder will be looking for a big finish on their home ground to close the campaign.
Swans are looking to hit back from last week's loss to the unbeaten league-leading West Perth as well with Indyana Bird, Maddison Catley, Adi Griffith and Riley Hall into the team to face the Thunder.
Going out for Swan Districts is Alyssa Tremlett, Jorjina Kean, Millie Edgar and Nahala H
