Round 15 WAFLW Match Report
Swan Districts kicked the only two goals of the first quarter and then the last two of the night in challenging conditions to record the crucial 21-point victory against West Perth in the second last round of the WAFLW season.
It was a significant challenge for Swan Districts taking on the second placed West Perth at Joondalup's Pentanet Stadium on Saturday night with the black-and-whites needing to win to maintain fourth position on the WAFLW ladder.
Swans then came out to kick the first two goals and last two goals of the contest on the way to the eventual 7.4 (46) to 3.7 (25) victory.
The win improves Swan Districts to a 7-6 record on the season to remain in fourth position with a game and percentage lead over the fifth placed South Fremantle.
Now to guarantee a finals position again in 2024, Swans need to defeat Peel Thunder this coming Saturday at Mandurah's Lane Group Stadium.
On a night where goals were increasingly difficult to come by given the conditions, Taylah Edwards and Sienna Gerardi managing to kick two majors apiece in the eventual win for Swan Districts.
Teen sensation Lily Paterson continued her dazzling midfield form for Swans as well with another 21 possessions to go with six tackles, three entries inside the forward 50 and a goal.
Kayley King also collected 17 disposals for the black-and-whites, Carys D'Addario 17, Isabella Edgley 16, Emma Humphries 15 and Hope Ugle-Hayward 15 to go with eight tackles and five inside-50 entries.
Despite the cold and wet conditions at Joondalup on Saturday night, Swan Districts made the perfect start to the crucial match up against the in-form West Perth with a goal inside 45 seconds to young gun Sienna Gerardi.
The only other goal of the quarter also went the way of the black-and-whites thanks to Taylah Edwards to see them open up a 12-point advantage by quarter-time.
West Perth got on the board to start the second term with a goal to Brooke Hongell and the Falcons had the first four scores of the opening 10 minutes, but then Swans responded strongly heading into half-time.
Swan Districts got goals to Luka Davis and Edwards to remain on top by 15 points at the main break.
The Falcons closed that deficit to nine points with an early goal in the second half to Katherine Bennett but Swans responded courtesy of a second goal to Gerardi for the evening.
That had Swan Districts leading still by 16 points at three quarter-time and ultimately the black-and-whites would kick the last two goals of the evening through Courtney Zappara and Lily Paterson to secure the supremely important 21-point win in the context of the season.
Also in Round 15 of the Rogers Cup on Saturday evening and it was a loss for Swan Districts with the unbeaten West Perth prevailing 8.16 (64) to 2.5 (17) at Pentanet Stadium.
The goals for Swans were kicked by Kirrali Richmond and Summer Ajduk with one round now of the Rogers Cup season remaining.
That will see Swan Districts take on Peel Thunder in Mandurah on Saturday morning needing a win to secure a place in the finals and to hold onto the current fourth position they are in with South Fremantle just percentage behind in fifth place.
