Round 14 WAFLW Match Report
Swan Districts pushed the rampant East Fremantle in the WAFLW on Sunday afternoon with Emily McGuire kicking another two goals and Lily Paterson outstanding ahead of the final two rounds to come.
It was always a significant test for Swans in Round 14 of the WAFLW on Sunday when hosting the league-leading reigning premiers East Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval who arrived on a dominant nine-game winning streak.
However, Swans made the perfect start with the first goal of the game to Emily McGuire and were right in the contest the rest of the afternoon despite East Fremantle ending up winning 4.10 (34) to 3.4 (22).
There are now just two rounds of the WAFLW home and away season remaining with Swan Districts still sitting in fourth position with a 6-6 record to be a game clear of both Subiaco and South Fremantle.
Swans will now finish the season away to both West Perth and Peel Thunder. Two wins and Swans will be guaranteed of another finals appearance in 2024, one win and they will likely still play finals and two defeats will most likely mean their season ends in two weeks' time.
On the afternoon she was celebrating her 100+ senior game with Swan Districts, Emily McGuire kicked another two goals to now have managed 10 in the past three matches.
Courtney Zappara was the other goalscorer on the day for the black-and-whites with one of her two kicks for the afternoon.
The remarkable form in the midfield of 18-year-old Lily Paterson continued as she racked up another 33 possessions to go with nine tackles, six marks and two entries inside the forward 50.
Carys D'Addario gave her tremendous support in the midfield too finishing with 24 disposals while Isabella Edgley gathered 20 touches, Kayley King 16, Indiana West 13 and Lauren Quaife 12 to go with 19 hit outs in the ruck and eight tackles.
On the day Swan Districts was acknowledging Recognition Week and also celebrating the 100+ senior game of Emily McGuire, it was a dream start with McGuire kicking the first goal of the game after just three minutes.
The only other goal of the first term came just before quarter-time for East Fremantle and that saw the Sharks take a two-point lead into the opening break.
It took 13 minutes for the first goal of the second quarter and that went the way of East Fremantle from Chloe Reilly before Swans almost immediately responded thanks to a second of the day to McGuire.
That saw the Sharks clinging to a two-point lead at half-time with Swan Districts back in front to start the third quarter with an early goal to Courtney Zappara.
East Fremantle quickly responded through Zippy Fish before the Sharks got another from Emmelie Fiedler to end up leading by 11 points at three quarter-time.
There wouldn’t be a goal kicked by either side in the final term with East Fremantle holding out for the 12-point victory.
Meanwhile, it was a bye for the Swan Districts Rogers Cup team in Round 14 with them currently sitting in fourth position on the ladder with a 7-5 record to be a game and percentage ahead of the fifth placed South Fremantle.
Swans will finish the Rogers Cup season away to the unbeaten West Perth and at home to Peel Thunder.
