Round 8 WAFLW Match Report
Swan Districts slipped outside of the top four in the WAFLW with a first ever loss to West Perth on Saturday.
Swan Districts played host to West Perth at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday afternoon having won all four previous meetings between the two teams, but it wasn’t to continue in their first meeting of 2024.
Swans had dominated the Falcons in those past four clashes over the last two years, but kicking 11 behinds from 12 scores on Saturday proved costly with West Perth claiming the 10.14 (74) to 1.11 (17) victory.
The lone goal on the day for Swan Districts was kicked in the second quarter by Tamzyn Beros as the 19-year-old continues to emerge as a quality player at WAFLW level. She also had five kicks, five handpasses, five hit outs and three tackles for the game.
Lily Paterson continues to be one of the brightest young talents in the state with the 17-year-old amassing 37 possessions, six marks and three inside-50 entries.
Emma Humphries is fitting in nicely to the Swans' midfield too in her first season at the club and gathered 20 disposals with Carys D'Addario another exciting young talent who had 17 touches and four tackles.
Taylah Edwards also gathered 13 possessions, Hope Ugle-Hayward 12, Isabella Edgley 12, Kayley King 11 and Naomi Baker 11.
The two teams combined to kick five behinds to start the game before the first goal was kicked by West Perth courtesy of Rithia Dunn.
The Falcons then also kicked the only other goal before quarter-time through Katherine Bennett to take a 15-point lead into the first break with Swans having managed just three behinds.
Former Swan Districts player Imahra Cameron then kicked two goals inside the first five minutes of the second quarter for West Perth to push their lead out to 27 points.
Swans did get a goal back through Tamzyn Beros, but unfortunately for the black-and-whites that would be their only goal of the afternoon.
Cameron responded with her third goal and West Perth managed a couple more before half-time to head into the long break with a 31-point advantage.
It was tough going in front of goal for Swan Districts throughout the second half with the home team managing just the five behinds despite playing some encouraging football to set up those opportunities.
West Perth would kick another two goals in the third quarter and two in the last to end up winning by 57 points for their first ever win against Swan Districts.
The day started at Steel Blue Oval in the morning with the Rogers Cup match up and the unbeaten reigning premiers West Perth defeated Swan Districts 10.10 (70) to 1.2 (8).
The lone goal in the game for Swans was kicked by Leah Howard.
Despite the loss, Swan Districts still sits in fourth position on the Rogers Cup ladder at the end of Round 8 with a 4-3 record to be a game behind the third placed Subiaco, and a game ahead of the fifth ranked South Fremantle.
