Round 7 WAFLW Match Report
Swan Districts kicked the last two goals of the contest but couldn’t quite close the gap on South Fremantle with the Bulldogs ending up claiming the 14-point WAFLW victory.
Swans arrived at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday afternoon in Round 7 of the WAFLW competition looking to further consolidate fourth position on the ladder and to back up last week's win against Subiaco.
However, South Fremantle ended up kicking seven of the game's first 10 goals up until three quarter-time before Swan Districts did kick the only two goals of the final term.
It wasn’t quite enough, though, with South Fremantle ending up beating Swan Districts 7.4 (46) to 5.2 (32).
Despite the loss, Swans remain in fourth position on the WAFLW ladder with a 3-3 record by the end of Round 7 and after the opening six games of the 2024 season.
Kayley King ended up kicking two goals for Swans from her 12 kicks to go with three marks and three inside-50 entries.
Carys D'Addario continued her fine form in the midfield for Swan Districts by collecting another 18 possessions along with eight tackles, five marks, five inside 50s and a goal.
Lily Paterson also picked up 18 disposals for the black-and-whites, Brianna Hyde 16, Isabella Edgley 16 and Emma Humphries 14 to go with laying 10 tackles.
Hope Ugle-Hayward also played her 50th WAFLW game for Swan Districts with the 23-year-old chaired off ground afterwards by Demi Liddle and Lauren Quaife.
She finished with 11 possessions, six tackles and three entries inside the forward 50 for the afternoon.
It took almost 12 minutes for the first score of the game and that went the way of Swan Districts with a goal to Emily McGuire, but South Fremantle responded just a minute later thanks to Pippa Sideris.
It again took almost 10 minutes for a goal in the second term and this time it was South Fremantle putting it on the board through Noa McNaughton to open up a 12-point lead.
Swans responded thanks to Carys D'Addario but then the Bulldogs closed the first half impressively with goals to Poppy Stockwell and Lauren Vecchio to open up an 18-point advantage by half-time.
Swan Districts closed to back within 13 points to start the second half with a goal to Kayley King but again the Bulldogs responded thanks to Sideris and Zoe Keley to be on top by 24 points at three quarter-time.
Swans weren't going away, though, and closed the deficit back to 12 points at the 15-minute mark of the last term after goals to King and Lily Paterson, but the Bulldogs held firm for the eventual 14-point home victory.
The day at Fremantle Community Bank Oval got underway on Sunday with the Rogers Cup contest which saw South Fremantle beat Swan Districts 9.6 (60) to 7.7 (49).
Despite the loss, Swan Districts remains clear in fourth position on the Rogers Cup ladder with a 4-2 record.
Ruby Whitehouse and Tannah Lee kicked two goals each for Swan Districts with one apiece to Luka Davis, Madison Fisher and Karri Parnham.
