Reserves Qualifying Final Match Report v Subiaco
Swan Districts set up its WAFL Reserves qualifying final victory on Saturday with six goals to one in the first half against Subiaco to set up a second semi-final battle with West Perth.
Swans finished the Reserves home and away season in second position on the ladder which did earn them the right to host the qualifying final, but with Subiaco's league team hosting its own qualifying final, it was the Lions at home at Leederville Oval on Saturday.
However, giving up the home ground advantage didn’t deter Swan Districts who kicked four goals to one in the first quarter and then the only two in the second on the way to setting up the eventual 9.10 (64) to 5.11 (41) victory.
The result means that Swans now advance to this Sunday's second semi-final which also will be held at Leederville Oval against West Perth.
The winner will move straight into the Grand Final at Optus Stadium on Sunday September 24 while the loser will get another chance in the preliminary final next week against the winner of the first semi-final between Subiaco and East Fremantle.
Six of the nine goals kicked by Swan Districts in the qualifying final came courtesy of Tyrell Metcalf and Lewis Zolnier-Owens who kicked three apiece. Metcalf kicked his from nine kicks and seven marks while Zolnier-Owens only needed three kicks to convert each of them into goals.
Mitch Bain finished the game with 22 possessions, four tackles and four inside-50 entries in the midfield for Swan Districts with youngster Lawson Humphries continuing his strong form to end the season at league level with 21 disposals, seven marks, four tackles and three inside 50s.
Max Chipper also had 18 touches and eight marks with Ayden Cartwright adding 18 possessions, eight marks, four inside-50 entries and a goal.
Jacob Sideris had 16 disposals, Ben Hewett 15, Ethyn Kane 14, Tarir Bayok 13, Luke Taylor 13 and Bailey Jenkin 13.
Swan Districts made the perfect start to the qualifying final with a goal to Tyrell Metcalf inside less than the opening 30 seconds. Six minutes later and Lewis Zolnier-Owens also kicked truly for Swans.
Subiaco did end up settling into the contest and got a goal back courtesy of Corey Robinson, but Swans closed out the first quarter with goals to Tarir Bayok and a second to Metcalf to take a 16-point lead into quarter-time.
Swan Districts were then able to extend that advantage further with the only two goals of the second quarter courtesy of Zolnier-Owens and Kristian Caporn to take a 28-point lead by half-time with six goals to just one from Subiaco.
Subiaco did breathe some life back into the contest to start the second half with the first two goals thanks to Keeshawn Cook and Jake Stergiou, but the Lions couldn’t get back closer than 16 points.
Swans responded with the last goal of the third quarter through Ayden Cartwright and by three quarter-time it was the black-and-whites in control leading by 25 points.
It took more than eight minutes for the first goal of the last quarter and that went the way of Swan Districts courtesy of Zolnier-Owens.
Metcalf then also added his third goal of the day soon after and the Swans would end up winning by 23 to earn their place in the second semi-final against West Perth with a spot in the Grand Final on the line.
Swans 9.10 (64) defeated Subiaco 5.11 (41)
