Leon Baker to be inducted into the Swans Hall of Fame
Leon Baker will join Simon Beasley in being inducted into the Swan Districts Football Club’s Hall of Fame in 2023.
Baker, like Beasley, fits into the Champion category of the Hall of Fame designed to include those Swans players and coaches who were recruited into other leagues, including the VFL, AFL and SANFL.
To reach the Hall of Fame level they need to have played or coached with distinction in these competitions and maintained a connection with the Club.
Baker played three seasons with Swans between 1981 – 1983, playing 64 games and kicking 101 goals. He played in the 1982 and 1983 Premierships and won the Swan Medal in 1983.
John Todd rated Baker as an outstanding talent and one of the best three players he coached at Swans. He was an extremely versatile player playing in the centre, ruck rover, half forward and even full forward. “He had the ability to turn a game and was a sensational midfielder”, said Todd.
Baker was recruited by VFL side Essendon in 1984 where he played 5 seasons, including 86 games, and kicking 70 goals. He also played in their 1984 and 1985 Premierships.
Baker represented WA in six games between 1984 and 1986 and was selected as an All Australian in 1984 and 1985.
He was inducted into WA’s Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and also selected in the Swans Team of the Century.
Baker’s record of playing in four consecutive Premierships for Swans and Essendon speaks volumes.
The remaining four 2023 Hall of Fame inductees, together with two elevated Immortals, and a second Iconic Moment will be announced over the coming weeks.
All will be officially recognised at the Swan Districts Hall of Fame Induction evening to be held at the club on Saturday 1st July 2023. It’s a wonderful opportunity for supporters to meet Swans royalty in person.
Tickets cost $100 and includes complimentary drinks on arrival and dinner.
