Simon Beasley to be inducted into the Swans Hall of Fame
Swan Districts Football Club will induct six new members into the club’s prestigious Hall of Fame in 2023. This will be the club’s third induction following those in 2016 and 2021.
The Swan Districts Hall of Fame was established to recognise and enshrine players, coaches, volunteers, and administrators who have made a significant contribution to the club on or off the oval since the club’s inception in 1934.
To date there have only been 38 members inducted into the Swan Districts Football Club Hall of Fame and only two have been elevated to Immortals. These include: Bill Walker (Immortal), John Cooper (Immortal), Robert Bryant, Ted Holdsworth, Lal Mosey, Tom Moiler, John (Jack) Murray, Joe Pearce, Duggan Anderson, Tim Barker, Ron Jose. Joe Lawson, Keith Slater, Stan Moses, Ken Bagley, Fred Castledine, Tony Nesbit, Haydn Bunton, Stan Nowotny, Ron Boucher, Keith Narkle, Garry Sidebottom, Don Langsford, John Todd, Don Holmes, Travis Edmonds, Shane Beros, Percy Bright, George Krepp, Peter Manning, Phil Narkle, Tom Mullooly, Bob Beecroft, Joel Cornelius, Colin Maynard, Dave Sidebottom, Sydney Sinclair, and John Turnbull.
The club’s Hall of Fame Selection Committee consists of club stalwarts and historians who spend considerable time carefully reviewing candidates for selection into this highly respected cohort.
Simon Beasley will be one of six people being inducted into the Swan Districts Football Club’s Hall of Fame in 2023.
Beasley fits into the Champion category of the Hall of Fame induction designed to include those Swans players and coaches who were recruited into other leagues, including the VFL, AFL and SANFL.
To reach the Hall of Fame level they need to have played or coached with distinction in these competitions and maintained a connection with the club.
Beasley played 4 seasons with Swans between 1978 – 1981, including 82 games and 295 goals. He was the club’s leading goalkicker in 1980 (97 goals – also winning the WAFL’s Bernie Naylor Medal), and also 1981 (119 goals – a club record).
Beasley kicked 6.5 (of 16 goals) in a dominant effort from full forward in the WA victory over Victoria in 1981, which saw him awarded the Simpson Medal. He went on to play in 4 state games, including 3 State of Origin.
After being recruited by VFL side Footscray in 1982, he went on to play 8 seasons, 154 games, and kicked 575 goals which remains the club’s record. He won the VFL’s John Coleman Medal for leading goalkicker in 1985 with 93 goals.
He was selected in Footscray’s Team of the Century in 2002 and inducted into WA’s Football Hall of Fame in 2007.
The remaining five 2023 Hall of Fame inductees, together with two new elevated Immortals and a second Iconic Moment, will be announced over the next couple of months.
These will be officially recognised at the Swan Districts Hall of Fame Induction evening to be held at the club on Saturday 1st July 2023. It’s a wonderful opportunity for supporters to meet Swans royalty in person.
Tickets cost $100 and includes complimentary drinks on arrival and dinner.
