Swans 2022 International Day of People With Disability (IDPwD) Breakfast
Swan Districts held a breakfast celebration of people with disability at the club today, made possible by Developmental Disability WA and Glenn Ottley.
It was in support of the International Day of People with Disabilities which is observed on 3 December every year as proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations. The occasion aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities.
Swans continues to have significant involvement in community and social engagement.
An important value guiding the strategic direction of the club is Everyone Matters. The club tries to bring people together, embrace equality, celebrate diversity, and provide support when support’s needed.
There’s nothing that personifies this value more than the club’s Integrated football team. The team competed in it’s first season in the Perth Football League. Men and women of all abilities are led by John and Kylie Stone.
Following the IDPwD theme this year of Not All Disabilities are Visible guest speaker Steve Mutsaers, an Associate Professor at the UWA Medical School – Centre for Respiratory Health, spoke about his research into fibrosis and mechanisms regulating mesothelial cell and serosal repair. Steve has been working on tissue epair for this unseen disability.
We were joined today by a number of Swans Integrated football players, carers and family members all discussing Leading the Change.
