Round 18 Match Report
Saturday's trip to the WACA Ground didn’t quite go to plan for Swan Districts with an eventual 78-point loss at the hands of East Fremantle, but there's still two weeks to go to lock away a finals position for 2022.
Swan Districts arrived at the WACA Ground playing at the venue for the first time since 1994 and it was a tight contest for the first half with a couple of late goals in the second quarter for Swans keeping them within just four points of the Sharks at the main break.
However, from there East Fremantle dominated the second half with 14 goals to two to end up winning 20.15 (135) to 8.9 (57).
What the result means in the context of the season for Swan Districts is that it leaves them in sixth position on the WAFL ladder with a 9-7 record. However, with Peel Thunder also losing Claremont, there still just remains percentage between the fifth and sixth placed teams.
Swans finish the season now at home to West Perth this coming Saturday and then away to Peel Thunder in the last round in Mandurah.
Swan Districts' key forward trio of Jesse Palmer, Brayden Noble and Chris Jones all kicked two goals apiece to combine for six of their team's eight goals in the game.
Jesse Turner was still the leading possession getter on the day for Swan Districts with 21 touches while Jehb O'Donohue gathered 20 disposals, Tobe Watson 20, Jarvis Pina 18 and Elijah Hewett 18.
East Fremantle kicked the first goal of the game after just two minutes thanks to Reuben McGuire, but Swan Districts soon warmed to the task with a goal to Jesse Palmer.
Swans were then able to close the first term strongly with late goals to Elijah Hewett and Chris Jones to see the visitors take a seven-point lead into the quarter-time break.
It took almost 10 minutes for the first goal of the second quarter and that went the way of East Fremantle through Corey Holmes, Ryan Lester-Smith soon added another and the Sharks took the lead before Cam Eardley extended that advantage to 13 points.
However, Swans responded with goals to Brayden Noble and Jones just before half-time and that meant it was just a four-point ball game with it all on the line at half-time.
It was all East Fremantle in the second half, though, with the Sharks piling on five goals to one in the third quarter to lead by 28 points at three quarter-time.
The Sharks then kicked another nine goals to one in a remarkable last quarter to end up winning 20.15 (135) to 8.9 (57) to maintain third position and to keep Swans outside the finals in sixth with two rounds remaining.
The day began at the WACA Ground with a terrific come from behind win for Swan Districts' colts. They kicked the only four goals of the last quarter to end up beating East Fremantle 7.11 (53) to 8.4 (52).
Luke Taylor kicked three goals for Swans while Jack Jago picked up 20 possessions, Jack Saunders 19, Tom Cathcart 18 and Josh Middleton 17 while Evan and Tom Smith combined for 56 hit outs in the ruck.
Swan Districts' reserves also scored an impressive 13.9 (87) to 3.12 (30) win against East Fremantle on Saturday at the WACA Ground.
Greg Ottaviano kicked three goals for Swan Districts and two each to Max Chipper and Brodyn Fitzgerald.
Chipper also racked up 31 possessions with Nelson Waite finishing with 28 touches, Lewis Tester 25, Brenton Hilton 24, Ayden Cartwright 24, Hudson Babich 23, Ben Hewett 23, Tarir Bayok 22 and Jackson Beck 21.
Swan Districts is now back home to Steel Blue Oval this Saturday afternoon to play host to West Perth.
