WAFLW Round 15 Match Report
The Swan Districts women’s league side have taken outright fourth on the WAFLW ladder, with a game and a bye remaining in the home and away season. Desperately needing the win against South Fremantle this weekend, they were able to kick back from a scoreless first quarter to take the 20-point win.
The Rogers Cup also lined up against the Bulldogs in Round 15, while the Reserves had the bye.
Check out the rundown for each of two Swan Districts WAFLW games below…
WAFLW League
The Swan Districts women’s league side have continued their unbeaten record against South Fremantle, notching up their fifth straight win since the Bulldogs inception in 2020.
In a low scoring but highly contested first quarter, it was South Fremantle that dominated time in their forward half. With 14 inside 50s to five in the Bulldogs favour, the Swans backline stood strong, rebounding out of defence each time the ball came in. As the end of the first quarter siren sounded, neither team were able to put even a point on the board, with a nil all draw the score.
The tables turned in the second, with the Swans controlling the ball in their forward line. Unfortunately for the black and whites, they couldn’t capitalise in attack, managing just three points to open the quarter. Against the flow, and with their only inside 50 for the term, it was the Bulldogs that kicked the first goal of the game. In a purple patch for Jaime Henry, she kicked the next 13 points straight, to see her side take a 10-point buffer into the half.
Kicking just one goal apiece in the third, South Fremantle’s inaccuracy was only able to close the gap by a point for the term, with the Swans ahead by 9 going into the final quarter.
A strong fourth term by the home side allowed them to hold their opponents goalless for the term, while kicking two themselves, pulling way to take the SD 5.6 (36) to SF 2.4 (16) win.
Dockers listed player, Sarah Wielstra, dominated the ruck, with her 16 individual hit outs beaten the entire South Fremantle’s team for the game, while Isabella Edgely lead all disposal getters on the day with 25 and Ruby Mahony amassed 11 tackles and 20 possessions.
Goals: 2 – J Henry, 1 – A Sharp, C Zappara, T Edwards
Best: J Henry, E McGuire, R Mahony, A Ralph, I Edgely
WAFLW Rogers Cup
Two goalless quarters cost the young Swans in their match against South Fremantle.
The scores were all but even at the first break, with the Bulldogs taking a narrow one point lead into quarter time.
Scoring just one point against their opponents two goal and two point quarter proved costly for the young black and whites, down by 14 heading into the half.
The Swans kicked back in the third, narrowing the gap by kicking two goals of their own, before South Fremantle responded. Just nine points separated the sides going into the final term.
Held scoreless in the fourth saw the Bulldogs run away for the SD 3.3 (21) to 5.7 (27) win.
Goals: 1 – C Daddario, M Rukuata, T Lee
Best: C Daddario, K Thomas, L Davis, A Moore, M Carron
WAFLW Round 16, 2022
The WAFLW League team will come up against Peel Thunder in their final game of the home and away season, with Round 17 seeing them on the bye. Having gone down to Peel in Mandurah by 45 points a fortnight ago, a win at home will all but see them play finals in 2022. Having already secured third spot, the Swans Reserves could finish as high as second, if they can pull off a victory against the winless Thunder, and other results fall their way.
