Round 6: Match Preview
With a big win this weekend, the Swan Districts Football Club could potentially leap into the top 5 on the 2022 WAFL ladder… the only thing standing in their way – the South Fremantle Bulldogs.
Having not been able to overcome them since 2017, South Freo have won the last nine encounters against the black and whites, which is their longest winning streak against the Swans since the 1970s.
After a disappointing loss to Subiaco in Kalgoorlie last Saturday, where the Swans were ahead for most of the game, the black and whites will go into this weekend’s match at home with great confidence, having lost to the Bulldogs by less than a goal in their match against them in Round 21 of last season.
Injuries to some key players has opened the door for debutants, Brenton Hilton and Brodie Morris, to step into the league side, with Tarir Bayok and Jackson Beck the other inclusions. Morris will have a big job on his hands, taking on the number one ruck spot in place of Matt Germs. Hilton will slot in at half back to replace Anthony Stephens while co-captain and defender-turned-forward, Chris Jones, will start out of centre-half back for Tony Notte.
So make sure you’re at Steel Blue Oval in full support this Saturday, as the Swans look to notch up their first win against South Fremantle in 5 years.
Last time we met
- SF won by just 5 points at Fremantle Community Bank Oval
- It was Alex Howard and Lewis Jetta’s final games in the black and white
- Aidan Clarke had a game high 13 tackles (6 more than the next best on the ground)
- The Swans kicked with almost 70% accuracy in front of goals
- Matt Germs had 36 of the Swans 40 hit outs for the game
Fun Facts
- Adam Pickering has not coached a winning Swans side against South Fremantle
- The Bulldogs are looking for their 10th consecutive win against the Swans
- Swans and South Freo have never played in a draw against each other
- Swans won their first ever encounter against the Bulldogs by 16 points in 1934
- Having played against each other at 7 different grounds in their history, the Swans win/loss record is only better than South Fremantle’s at two of those grounds – Perth Oval and Rockingham.
