WAFLW Round 13 Wrap Up
It was a mixture of results for our Swan Districts women’s sides, who all came into the round looking to secure spots in the finals, or keep in contention for the premiership race.
Playing away at Leederville oval against the Subiaco Lions, we saw two percentage boosting wins and a surprise loss on Sunday.
You can check out a breakdown of the games below.
WAFLW League
Having beaten Subiaco in their last 5 games, the Swans League side came into this game ready to secure third spot on the WAFLW ladder.
Unfortunately for the black and whites, the Lions were just as hungry to win, taking the first four scoring shots of the game, luckily only managing one goal and three behinds. As the Swans started to regain possession of the ball, it was Hope Ugle-Hayward who was able to kick the first major for the Swans, to close the gap to just three points. Subi added another late in the quarter, with Amy Mulholland and Maggie MacLachlan causing the damage for the home side with all six scoring shots in the first term.
It was a high pressure second quarter, the Swans taking just over 10 minutes to kick the first goal of the term, through Emily McGuire. Controlling the ball, Subiaco kicked back just before the half time siren, with four of their players in double digit possessions, 13 additional hit outs and 9 more inside 50’s.
A half time rev up by head coach, Adam Dancey, was evident coming out in the third quarter, with the black and whites more desperate for the ball and capitalising with the first two goals in six minutes, to take the lead for the first tie in the game. With the Lions responding immediately with a goal of their own, the final term was set to be a nail biter, with less than a goal separating the teams heading into the fourth.
It didn’t take long for the home side to regain the lead, kicking two goals in the first three minutes of the quarter, and adding another just a few minutes later. A couple of missed opportunities in front of goals saw the black and whites able to kick just two points in the final term, with Subiaco taking the SL 6.9 (45) to 4.4 (28) victory.
Jaime Henry had an impressive game, leading the Swans in disposals (19), tackles (7) and inside 50s (6).
In a tough run home in the final four rounds of the 2022 season, the Swans play Peel Thunder twice, who currently sit above them on the ladder, along with South Fremantle who are one game below them, before a bye in the last round of the home and away season.
Goals: 2 – E McGuire, 1 T Edwards, H Ugle-Hayward
Best: J Henry, T Pescud, E Nanut, K Chirichilli, A Bushby
WAFLW Reserves
It was a dominant performance from our Swans Reserves side on Sunday morning, holding their Subiaco opponents to just four scoring shots for the day, while piling on 19 of their own. Managing just 37% accuracy in front of goals, the black and whites total score at quarter time equalled that of the Lions final score in a strong day for a percentage boost.
Holding the home side goalless in the second quarter, while adding another two goals themselves, the Swans took a 21-point lead into the halftime break.
Unable to completely blow their opponents away in the third, the black and whites managed just three goals from seven scoring shots, to extend their lead to 36 going into the final term.
With scoring drying up in the fourth quarter, holding the Lions scoreless and adding just four points of their own, it was the Swans that took home the SL 2.2 (14) to 7.12 (54) win.
Sitting in a comfortable third place on the WAFLW ladder, the Swans Reserves have now secured a finals berth with only four rounds remaining.
Goals: 2 – A Ugle-Hayward, T Beros, 1 – R Holwill, E Bourne, C Spence
Best: R Holwill, K Kennedy, A Ugle Hayward, C Ryder, T Beros
WAFLW Rogers Cup
An all-round performance from the young Swans saw them turn a two point deficit at quarter time into a comprehensive, percentage boosting win.
After a slow start, it was a seven goal haul from the black and whites in the second quarter that blew their opponents out of the water, with that term alone outscoring the Lions total final result.
The demolition continued for the Swans in the second half, limiting the home side to a single goal, while piling on another seven themselves to take the methodical SL 4.3 (27) to SD 16.6 (102) win.
The black and whites had an incredible 12 goal scorers for the match, and need to win all of their remaining games, with other results needing to go their way, to make the finals.
Goals: 2 – V Marshall, R Hall, M Carron, B Gallagher, 1 – J Kean, J Byrne, S Pollard, C Daddario, K Pomponio, L Howard, G Hill, M Rukuata
Best: G Hill, R Hall, C Daddario, J Kean, S Pollard
