A duo of Swans to swap the black and white for the black and gold
The Swan Districts very own Sam Fisher and Jesse Turner have been named in the initial squad to don the famous Black and Gold Western Australian jersey as part of the 2022 Kia Australia WAFL State Team.
Along with 33 other WAFL contenders, including a cohort of former AFL listed players, the squad will train together over the coming weeks with the hope of being selected in the final side, to be named on Wednesday 11th May.
Those selected will represent WA against South Australia on Sunday 15th May at Optus Stadium.
In what has become a fierce rivalry between the two states, the teams are locked at 48 wins apiece since the inception of the national games in 1904.
Looking for redemption, WA have lost 11 of the last 15 games against SA, including the most recent two on the trot.
2020 Sandover Medallist, Sam Fisher, is grateful to possibly pull on the black and gold jersey for the second time in his short stay in WA so far.
“It’s a huge honour” Sam said. “I have such a great respect for this state and the importance footy holds here.”
“We played last year and had high expectations of ourselves to win. Unfortunately we didn’t perform as well as we should have, and we will be striving to go better this year.”
“There are some strong names on our list and it’ll be a great year to be a part of it.”
Not only will the black and whites be representing WA on the field, league coach Adam Pickering has been selected to run the backline, amidst a highly talented coaching team.
“It’s pretty humbling to be given the chance to work with a squad that has the best talent in WA” he said.
“I was the backline coach at East Perth and played in defence for the back end of my career, so I’m excited for this opportunity.”
Be there to see WA run out against SA on Sunday 15th May at Optus Stadium.
