WAFLW Round 11 Match Report

Tuesday, May 3, 2022 - 2:34 PM

A big win, a narrow loss and a bye for the Swans women wrapped up an exciting weekend of football.

Playing away against West Perth in Joondalup, a win was very important for both teams, as the back end of the season quickly closes in.

Check out the breakdown for each game below…

WAFLW Rogers Cup

It was a heartbreaking loss for the young Rogers Cup team. A win would have put them just one game out of finals contention, but it wasn’t meant to be on Sunday morning in Joondalup.

A quick start to the Swans saw them unable to fully capitalise on the scoreboard, managing just two goals from five attempts, holding an eight-point lead at the first break.

The Falcons kicked into gear in the second, taking the lead and outscoring the black and whites to take a four-point buffer into half time.

Scoring just a solitary point in the third, an even two goals separated the teams going into the final term.

Although the Swans were able to make up the two-goal deficit, the three points scored by the Falcons were enough to get them over the line in a tight WP 5.8 (38) to SD 5.5 (35) defeat.

Goals: 2 – C Daddario, 1 – H Arrowsmith, K Pomponio, L Howard

Best: K Thomas, C Daddario, M Carron, K Myles, L Paterson

Bye

WAFLW League

After a loss last week that the Swans League side would rather forget, a win in Joondalup would get their confidence back up for the last six rounds of the season.

With last year’s Premiers, Peel Thunder, having the bye, outright third on the WAFLW ladder was up for grabs.

The Swans capitalised on their efforts in front of goals in the first, kicking four goals from five attempts, while holding their opponents to one goal three.

A masterclass after the quarter time break saw the black and whites hold West Perth scoreless for the next two quarters while adding another five goals themselves, taking a 51-point lead going into the last term.

The scoring dried up in the fourth, with both sides only managing a solitary goal. Turning around their heavy defeat from last weekend, the Swans dominated all day for the strong WP 2.3 (15) to SD 10.8 (68) victory.

Sitting one game clear of fourth, the percentage boosting win sees the club placed in a good position, with four of their five remaining games against teams sitting below them on the ladder.

Tyler Fitzgerald was strong in attack, but only managed one goal from five scoring shots, and Jaime Henry lead all possession getters on the ground with 28 disposals.

Goals: 2 – A Sharp, C Zappara, T Beros, 1 – T Fitzgerald, J Kean, D Liddle, T Lee

Best: J Henry, A Bushby, J Kean, N Baker, T Beros

Round 12, 2022

Round 12 sees all women’s teams at home, taking on Claremont sides that sit above them on the ladder. The Rogers Cup need a win to stay within finals reach, while a victory to both the League and Reserves sides would see them close the gap between them and second place.
