WAFL Round 3 Match Report
The Swan Districts top side have continued their winning streak against the Demons, after a come from behind victory extended their run to four straight wins over Perth.
After watching the Reserves and Colts beaten in the games leading up to the match, the pressure was on to put their first win on the board, in front of a hostile away crowd.
Check out the breakdown of each game below…
WAFL Colts
It was a strong start for the Colts boys on Saturday morning, controlling the ball and giving their forwards opportunity to hit the scoreboard. A 15-point lead at quarter time looked promising to set up their first win of the season.
Unfortunately, that’s where things dried up for the young Swans. Held goalless in both the second and third quarters, the home side took just a two-point lead into the final term.
With just one goal apiece in the fourth, along with some narrow misses, it was the Demons that finished the game with a tight PD 5.8 (38) to SD 4.10 (34) win.
Darcy Jones was a stand-out on the day, amassing an incredible 44 disposals, 6 tackles and 8 inside 50s.
Goals: 1 - E Smith, R Hardeman, B Jones, D Hirst
Best: D Jones, A Laurisson, R Hardeman, B Jenkin
WAFL Reserves
A quick start to Perth put the Swans Reserves on the back foot from the get-go. Kicking two goals to the Demons six, a 24-point deficit was the difference at the first quarter break.
The second quarter saw teams’ trades goals, with a similar margin dividing them at the half.
The Swans were held goalless in the third, while their opponents continued to stretch their lead to over seven goals, before going down PD 14.9 (93) to SD 7.4 (46) at the final siren.
Jamison Ugle led all possession getters on the day with 27 disposals.
Goals: 2 - K Hughes, K Caporn, N Hannan, 1 - E Bolton
Best: L Tester, D Ralph, N Hannan, E Kane, J Ugle
WAFL League
In a tough first quarter, the Swans found themselves defending hard inside the home sides 50m arc. Their constant pressure saw the Demons only manage two goals from eight scoring shots, while the black and whites were accurate around goals, with Tom Edwards, Jesse Turner and Jak Watson making the most of their opportunities, to find both sides locked up at 18 at the first break.
A goalless quarter in consecutive weeks, allowed Perth to kick away in the second, taking a 22-point lead into half time.
In what can only be seen as an inspired move by coach, Adam Pickering, key defender Chris Jones was pushed forward in the second half, causing problems for the Perth defenders, and getting the Swans back on the scoreboard.
Outscoring the Demons nine goals to four, the black and whites fought back after half time, after having trailed for most of the day, to take the impressive PD 10.13 (73) to SD 12.6 (78) victory.
Co-captain, Chris Jones, kicked three goals for the day and was pleased that although they had a slow start to the match, the fight back was impressive, particularly after the obstacles they’ve faced to start the season.
‘It was a great result, considering how poorly we played in the first half’ Jones said. ‘The boys have been working hard on fixing the mistakes from the close games we’ve recently lost and overcome some serious adversity through Covid omissions.’
‘Hopefully we can build on this and gain some momentum for the rest of the year.’
Goals: 3 - T Edwards, C Jones, 2 - G Ottaviano, 1 - S Bright, J Turner, B Hewett, J Watson
Best: G Ottaviano, T Edwards, C Jones, T Watson, S Bright
Round 4 sees the men’s teams return home to Steel Blue to take on Claremont sides that are all in the top five of the WAFL ladder, including an undefeated and top seeded League side. Make sure you are there to cheer on the black and whites in what is guaranteed to be a great weekend of football.
