The Swan Districts WALFW 2022 Round 8 Wrap-Up

Monday, April 11, 2022 - 1:02 PM

Round 8 saw our Swan Districts League and Reserve sides on the road for a second straight week, facing strong Claremont sides who have only dropped one game between them at Revo Fitness Stadium so far this season.

Having faced significant losses at the hands of the Tigers early in the year, Round 8 provided the black and whites with an opportunity to face a club that already appears destined to push deep into finals.

Check out the breakdown of each game below…

WAFLW Rogers Cup

The Rogers Cup girls had the bye in Round 8, and with a league-wide break over the upcoming Easter weekend, the side will be refreshed and well rested for a Round 10 home clash against an East Fremantle side that have only lost one game so far this season.

WAFLW Reserves

After going down to the Tigers by four goals in Round 1, the black and whites came out with something to prove in the first quarter, kicking the only goal for the term while holding their opponents to just two points.

A scoreless second quarter by the Swans, while allowing Claremont to kick two goals of their own, saw the home side take an 8-point lead into the main break.

Teams traded goals in the second half, before the home side kicked away to take the 6.4 (40) to 4.3 (27) victory.

Isabel Strover, Hayley Hill, Kelly Polla, Luka Davis and Riley Hall were all part of the Swans best on the day. Katlynne Badger finished the game with two goals, while Hill and Hall kicked one apiece.

WAFLW League

With some key outs to the League side for a variety of reasons, opportunities for those pushing to play at the top level opened up in Round 8. Against a team that have only lost one game for the season, the black and whites knew that this Claremont side would be one of the benchmarks on who to beat in 2022.

From the opening bounce, the Swan Districts League side were under attack in enemy territory. With ruck Sophie Proudfoot providing the only score for the quarter, the Tigers were strong, kicking three goals and four points to take a 16 point lead into the first break. Aimee Ralph proved to be important early, applying pressure to her opponents and leading all possession getters with 8 disposals.

A quick goal to the Tigers early in second extended their lead, before all scoring dried up leading into the half.

The Swans continued to struggle with Claremont’s ball pressure and movement around the ground, conceding another five goals to one, taking a 45-point deficit into the final term.

Limiting their opponents to a single point in the fourth quarter, inaccuracy in front of goals could have seen the black and whites narrow the gap, before going down 9.6 (60) to 2.6 (18).

Isabella Edgley, Aimee Ralph, Sophie Proudfoot, Demi Liddle and Eliza Gelmi were amongst the top performers of the day. Hope Ugle-Hayward also continued with her defensive ball pressure, amassing 10 tackles, to average over eight a game across her last three matches.

Between them, Courtney Zappara and Proudfoot kicked the Swans two goals for the day.
