Season 2022 brings opportunity and excitement to Swan Districts
With cases from the Covid pandemic expected to peak throughout the community in late March, only the first nine rounds have currently been fixtured for the 2022 WAFL Premiership Season, seeing Swan Districts play each team once. A 20-game season, plus a four-week finals series, is expected to be played out, with the remaining fixtures likely to be released in round seven.
Swan Districts have a great opportunity to make a statement early this season, playing their first three games against teams who failed to make the finals last year.
A Good Friday match will see a confident Black Ducks side kick off their season at Leederville Oval against East Perth, a team they defeated each time they met in 2021, in what is set to be a highly competitive WAFL season. The Swans will then host East Fremantle at Steel Blue, before heading to Mineral Resources Park to play the Demons
A tough run follows, playing the top three sides in consecutive rounds in Claremont, Subiaco and South Fremantle respectively. The team will be looking to take advantage of the passionate home crowd against the Tigers and Bulldogs, with both games being played at Bassendean.
They will look to continue the home wins against West Coast and Peel Thunder, before travelling to Joondalup to take on a West Perth side responsible for knocking them out of the finals in 2021.
With the rest of the fixtured season currently unknown, it will be important for the club to capitalise on their early opportunities.
With a number of experienced players retiring from Swan Districts over the off season, league Coach, Adam Pickering, said it’s an exciting time to see who is going to take these opportunities into their own hands and demand a permanent spot in the top side.
“We’ve had a really good fresh intake of Colts that have come up and brought a really great energy to our squad” he said. “They’ve turned up in really great shape and are attacking the pre-season strongly. It’s probably the best I’ve seen from a Colts group coming up in the time I’ve been here.”
“The rest of the team have been self-driven over Christmas and returned to the club all guns blazing.
“We’ve also added some real quality to the squad with guys that have come across to the club, or returned to us, after having AFL experience.
“We’ve lost a few of our key players from last year like Matt Riggio, Alex Howard and Corey Gault, but it opens up a great opportunity to other guys.
“A number of our players have been with us for three or more seasons now, but haven’t quite got the chance to play as many league games as they would’ve liked, and now is there chance to stamp their own footprint on the club.
“We look forward to seeing which boys will really step up and take the mantelpiece these guys have left for them.”
