From WAFLW to AFLW
Swan Districts Football Club congratulate the 3 Swans WAFLW players who were drafted in the 2021 AFLW.
Midfielder Dana East joins the Fremantle Dockers after being drafted with Pick 31. Dana who previously played basketball only started her football pathway 2 years ago. She has played for WA at the 2021 NAB AFL U19 Championships and ranked seventh for clearances, second for tackles and averaged 20 disposals per game.
Dana spoke to Swan Districts about being drafted to the Fremantle Dockers.
“Swans have been a massive part of my journey and improvement this year. I’m very thankful for everyone who has assisted me to get where I am, I’m very thankful for the opportunity and I’m more than excited for what is yet to come.”
Ruck Sarah Lakay joins the West Coast Eagles after being drafted with Pick 40. Sarah who has a basketball background, left basketball to utilise her height in the WAFLW. Sarah broke the all-time AFLW Draft combine records in both standing vertical jump with 72cm and the running vertical jump with 82cm.
The AFLW list manager, Jordan Loxley had this to say about Sarah.
“Sarah’s a ruck, who had a really, really exceptional back end of the year, particularly her grand final. A good quality tap ruck, who can also go forward and mark it. Her Combine was exceptional, with her 20 metre sprint and her vertical leap, so we’re really excited and think she has a huge upside.”
Ruck and forward Sarah Wielstra joins the Fremantle Dockers after being drafted with Pick 57. Sarah played primarily as number 1 ruck in 2020 but played in the forward in 2021. As a ruck Sarah gets her advantage by jumping into the contest, and as a forward she has a penetrating kick, leads hard and makes contests.
Sarah spoke to Swan Districts about being drafted to the Fremantle Dockers.
“Honestly, it’s a dream come true, something I didn’t think was ever going to happen. I’m so grateful to everyone especially the coaches at Swan Districts who have helped me improve my footy and I can’t wait to get started.”
