Swans to launch Wheelchair Football team
Swans continue to challenge the traditional sporting environment and will be launching a Wheelchair Football team in the WA Wheelchair Football League presented by WA All Abilities Football and the Swan Districts Football Club.
Wheelchair Football is a fun, tactical and enjoyable game and we encourage everyone in our community to our Come and Play session on the 25th of July between 1 and 3pm. This will be the first of a number of opportunities in the coming months for people in our community to pull on the black and white, as part of our growing inclusive sports program.
The team will be managed by Swans Community, and come under the guidance of the Swans Disability Access and Inclusion Committee. The Chair of the committee, Eliza Outred said that “It is truly an honour and a privilege to be Chair of the DAIS committee here at Swans. Not only are we progressive in our thinking, we are inclusive and welcoming of people of all abilities.” Swans Wheelchair Football has evolved from our successful annual Count Me In Round each year which was created in 2017 by club stalwart, and Disability Access and Inclusion Committee member, Maurice Embley.
Swans WAFLW ruck Stephanie Graskowski along with teammate Jessica Cox, WAFL Captain Matt Riggio and midfielder Josh Cipro had the opportunity this week to spend some time in the specially made sports chairs. Graskowski said that “it is really awesome that the club is making footy accessible to more people. I can’t wait to see the competition in action and give it a try!”
The WA Wheelchair Football League will host Come and Try sessions on Sunday, July 25 and Sunday, August 1, from 1 pm to 3 pm at HBF Stadium, Arena 2, 100 Stephenson Ave, Mount Claremont WA with sports wheelchairs available to borrow on the day.
