Round 12 Preview v Subiaco

Friday, June 25, 2021 - 10:31 AM by Chris Pike

SWAN Districts will look to snap a six-year losing streak against Subiaco and bounce back from last week's loss with the black-and-whites taking on the Lions and needing the victory to hold on to a spot in the top five after Round 12.

Both Subiaco and Swan Districts enter their clash at Leederville Oval looking to bounce back from defeats last weekend.

Subiaco fought back hard but fell short against the West Coast Eagles to miss the chance of reclaiming top spot on the ladder from Claremont with the Lions now entering Round 12 in second position with a 7-2 record.

Swan Districts also lost to West Perth for a second time this season last Saturday to now only just be clinging to their position in the top five with a 5-4 record.

The two teams already met earlier this season in Round 7 at Steel Blue Oval with Subiaco winning a tight one 8.10 (58) to 7.8 (50) against Swan Districts.

That continued quite the dominant run for the Lions against Swans, with them having now won the last 12 meetings between the two teams by an average of 49.8 points.

And at Leederville Oval where Saturday's game will be played, Subiaco has also won seven straight against Swan Districts. Swans haven’t beaten the Lions since Round 20, 2015 and not at Leederville Oval since a 43-point victory in Round 7, 2014.

Mitchell Bain, Matthew Germs, Nathan Ireland, Lewis Jetta and Jak Watson have all been included into the extended squad for Swan Districts from the team that lost to West Perth a week ago. Tarir Bayok is the only out so far.

From the Subiaco team that lost to West Coast last Saturday, Oskar Matthews, Jacob Miller, Connor Patterson, Josh Robbins and Max Walters coming into the squad while Nick Menegola is the only out at this stage.

Subiaco will also be celebrating the 100th WAFL appearances of premiership stars Ben Sokol and Drew Rohde.

Swan Districts comes into Saturday's clash still in fifth position on the ladder but the difference between a win and loss could be significant.

A win against the Lions and depending on other results, Swans could be back into third position and then only one game behind the second placed Subiaco.

However, a loss could see the black-and-whites slip to a 5-5 record and potentially fall out of a finals position after Round 12 altogether.

Swan Districts is going to have to play well to come away with the first win over Subiaco since 2015 though.

The Lions come into the game as the third best attacking team in the competition but far and away the best defensive team, conceding just 59.4 points a game. Swans, meanwhile, give up 69.4 points but only manage to score 76.9 themselves compared to Subiaco's 85.1.

Getting their hands on the ball is going to be important for Swan Districts as well. So far this season, Subiaco is averaging 19.2 more possessions than their opponents while Swans are averaging 13.2 fewer than their direct opposition.

The start to the game could be key to deciding the end result too. Over the opening 11 rounds, Swan Districts are the best first quarter team in the competition while Subiaco is ranked third.

But from there, Subiaco is also ranked first, sixth and second over the last three quarters while Swan Districts is fifth in second quarters, fifth in third terms and eighth in final quarters having been outscored by their opponents throughout the season by 30 points.
