Swans women ready to launch into 2021
The Swans WAFLW and Rogers Cup sides are ready to fly into the year, having had their official season launch and jumper presentation last night.
Swan Districts has become the destination club for women around WA, with a lot of new players leaving their original teams eager for their chance to put on the black and white jersey in 2021.
With a lot of new faces training with the club throughout the preseason, second-year Captain Emily McGuire said it’s exciting to see the different skill sets that have been on display.
“We’ve got a lot of talent coming through this year” she said. “Seeing the new girls train for the past few months and playing in our intraclub match last week, it’s exciting and we can’t wait to get out there and play together.”
Unlike last season, AFLW listed players will be able to take their place on the field again this year, if not selected by their respective team and at the conclusion of the AFLW season. Not only will this bolster the side, it will also provide additional teaching experiences for the younger generation who are making their way up the footy ranks.
With strong expectations for his team, Coach Adam Dancey has set a high bar in 2021, with the desire to get the best out of his players both on and off the field.
“The challenge for us this year is to kick 10 goals a game” he said. “They are a really professional group and have all the talent to do so.”
This season will see the senior side move to a Captain/Leadership Group format. Emily McGuire will be the sole Captain of the group for the second year in a row, with Brianna Hyde, Jessica Cox, Nicole Bombardieri, Stephanie Graskoski and Lauren Osborne rounding out the rest of the Leadership Group.
The Rogers Cup girls will be led by rookie Captain, Brodi Henry, with Siofra Clarke and Jorjina Kean completing the Leadership Group.
A player auction was held during the evening, providing a way for members and supporters to get more involved with the players at every game. In a testament to the large crowd in attendance, a whopping $9,380 was raised on the night.
A big thank you to our valued sponsors, HS Hyde & Son and Jones & Co, for being in attendance and for their continued support throughout 2021.
Be there this weekend as our women’s teams battle Claremont at Steel Blue Oval in Round 1 of the 2021 Optus WAFLW Premiership Season.
