NAIDOC 2020
Swans Community team were very active during this year’s rescheduled NAIDOC celebrations.
Painting Boomerangs (Kylies) with dreamtime story themes, teaching Marn Grook (meaning: Game Ball) and coaching, playing and umpiring a NAIDOC football match were a part of our engagement tasks.
The painting of the ‘Kylies’ was a popular activity amongst the students and some fantastic designs have been produced.
The Marn Grook lesson and game was held between Swan View Primary School and Moorditj (noongar for great, strong, excellent) Noongar Community College. Following the Marn Grook lesson, over 40 boys and girls played in the traditional game in front of the whole Swan View students, staff and parents.
The students from both schools played the game in great spirit and the entertainment for the spectators was spectacular.
Finally, on the Friday of NAIDOC week Swans female footballers Nyra Anderson, Hayley Cole and Brianna Hyde joined in with students from Midvale Primary and Swan View SHS Girls Academy in an exhibition match in front of the whole school cohort.
Our Swan Districts players showed their skills whilst bringing the younger girls into the game and demonstrating great leadership. All the players loved having our girls play and present the group with some awards post game.
