Swans looking at keeping up with the Jones’ next season
The Swan Districts have wasted no time in searching for ways to improve in 2021.
Having failed to make a finals appearance since 2017, the Swans have taken steps to rectify and fill the gaps required to see them return to being a top five team again next season.
Part of this effort has seen them recruit tall swingman, Chris Jones, to their defensive stocks.
At 6ft 6in, Jones has reinvented himself as an intercept marking defender who has proven he can push forward and kick a goal. With strong hands, great endurance and accurate by foot, he will slot nicely into the centre-half back position, while filling the defensive hole left by Denver Grainger-Barras if drafted.
Starting his career with the Eastern Rangers, Chris moved across to the Box Hill Hawks at the end of 2014. After four seasons and a 2018 premiership, he stepped away from senior football, spending a couple of months discovering South America. Upon his return home, he played with South Croydon in the Eastern Football League, along with the Tiwi Bombers for their 2019/20 campaign. 2020 would have seen him back in the VFL, having signed with Port Melbourne, before the recent pandemic shut the entire competition down.
Ready to be back at the top level again, he is expected to arrive in Perth in early January. Chris is looking forward to meeting his new teammates, reacquainting himself with old friends and playing in front of the WAFL crowds.
“I’m mates with Frank (Anderson) and have played against Sam (Fisher)” he said. “It’ll be exciting to play with them next season.”
“I’ve watched some of the games and the crowds over there can be much bigger than the VFL."
“I just can’t wait to come over and get started.”
