Being the Best You!- A Youth Engagement School Holiday Program with Swans
Keeping active, trying new things, meeting new people and having fun along the way has been the trademark of the Swans School Holiday Program.
Our Community team have engaged with over 115 young people in the two week school holiday period from suburbs as far and wide as Woorooloo, Chidlow, Mundaring, Swan View and other Swan Districts zones.
WAFLW and WAFL players have been present in each activity joining in the fun and being there for the young people in mentoring roles and discussing their journey towards semi-professional sport.
Activities over the course of the two weeks have included designing and painting a personalised skate board deck, a historical walk around Mt Helena finishing with a BBQ and games at Lake Leschenaultia, a session at ‘Bounce’ followed by lunch and football activities at Steel Blue Oval and finally a walk along the Bibbulmun track with Noongar Elder Jo Collard learning about Culture and Country.
Amongst these activities, Swans Community participants also fielded two football teams to support Edmund Rice’s Harmony Cup with a day of sport and engagement. We had 41 players across the two teams participate in the day and some great footy was played.
Swans Engagement Officer, Hayley Cole, has been engaging with Edmund Rice to promote AFL in the CALD community. “It was great to see so many CALD participants playing, umpiring and coaching… it was a great opportunity for Swans to share in this experience” expressed Hayley.
The holiday programs have been an ongoing success and we look forward to providing these opportunities in the future.
We would like to thank everyone involved in preparing the activities and especially to the Shire of Mundaring for partnering and supporting our holiday programs, and finally to all the participants who attended and made the activities so much fun!
